Where to live in Florida

Anyone who's been around for more than 6 months has seen me but I've been lurking because a while back it got real agro in here. Well, I'm back and about to move back to civilization and looking for opinions.

I've applied to college in Florida; Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa to be exact. Where would you move if you had the chance. Any Foosters in those cities would be a big plus too because I know JaxGtr has chimed in before.

So, where would you go. Oh, and hi to everyone I used to talk to.

Welcome back, good to see you.

As for your question; I'd try to stay as far away from Florida as possible.

Thanks.

I have a scholarship if I stay in Florida. It's kind of hard to say no to 100% paid tuition plus $600 a year for books.

Hmm, apparently nobody really likes FL. I plan on leaving when I graduate college. I just don't want to give up the free money. Unless someone wants to pay for my college somewhere else!?! I'll take volunteers for that too.

I'll be in and out for a while still. I'm in Africa until Sept 6th, then VA for a month. If anyone is near Quantico we should meet up for a beer, I won't have a bike. Then in FL for a few years, hence the question for the thread.

Well, I love Florida, and would move there, but... well, I just moved to Austin, so that wouldn't make any sense. I did really like Tampa and St. Petersburgh when I visited.

Well the best cycling and education was not on your list.... UF and Gainesville.

That said... next best school would be UCF / Orlando... then USF/Tampa-St Pete UNF in JAX would be last in educ but second as far as cycling....

I would go to UCF based on your choices... there is decent riding just north of there in Clermont

good luck

Mike

Hum, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa... OK. I've lived in the Orlando area for 2.5 years. I have visited Tampa a gazillion times. Never been to Jacksonville but have friends there. From what I can tell, quality of living goes like this:

Jacksonville > Orlando > Tampa.

About Orlando...

Orlando does suck for cycling tho. Specially the UCF area, too much heavy traffic. I move a little bit up north to Altamonte Springs trying to get away from crime. It was better, still got my car stolen from the front of the apartment so... moved a little bit more to the north to the Longwood / Lake Mary area... way better. But then, this is too far away from UCF. Unless you could do with starting at the local community college and moving up to the state universities later...

I don't know how bad it is to commute to UCF from the west side, but Clearmont is generally known as the cyclists heaven around here. Look it up on your favorite mapping site.

And please avoid Pine Hills like the plage.

Isn't bright futures wonderful? You don't get $600 for books anymore. If you qualified for 100% why didn't you get into UF?

I would go with O-Town based on your options.

Go to Florida Gulf Coast University and live in Bonita Springs or Naples. The best places to live hands down.

Hope you got deep pockets.

I live in Orlando (Windermere) and i can tell you one thing: I am getting out as soon as I can. Originally from NJ and thinking of moving to NZ in a year or two. The Traffic is HELL out here. The traffic has outgrown the infrastructure big time.

I wouldn't be so sure about UCF - if its the best Florida has to offer, i am scared, very very scared. One of the girls I work with graduated less then a year ago and does not know how to attach a file to an email Thats not the least of it...

Clermont is the cycling area (it actually has elevation change greater then 10 feet) but is a pretty easy drive to get out to. At least from Windermere. Only familar with the area around 535 which = disney, so i am no expert. Only been here since December (and have hated every day).

Yes, it is.
Tampa would be my choice out of that list. I'd actually prefer Miami, but from that list, Tampa.

I'd pick Jacksonville because it's the closest to the state line....

Are you from Gville? I am. UF is only accepting transfer students with more than 60 credits (not me) and freshman need a 4.0 and a 1400 SAT. Yep, I applied. And for whoever doesn't believe that, feel free to check on it. So I'm exploring other options.

I'm coming off of 7 years in the military and have about 50 credits. They require 60 for transfer students and won't wave it for military vets.

Did you check into FSU? The riding up here is fabulous, the people are gracious, and you don't have to put up with snowbirds all winter.

I have a real love hate relationship with Florida. Iíve lived here since I was six years old in the 1970ís. Iíve seen a lot of change and Iím sad to say not for the better. However, there is some great natural beauty out there it is just being ruthlessly destroyed. The housing slowdown is kind of a blessing as far as development goes.

Out of your three cities I know the least about Jacksonville. It is a pee pee soaked heck hole has always been my impression. The only redeeming feature is it is near some pretty cool places on the Atlantic coast like St. Augustine. OhÖand they historically donít get hit with hurricanes as much.

Orlando is a pee pee soaked tourist choked Mickey Mouse heck hole. The only reason I can see living there is if you really like amusement parks. Hurricane magnet!

I actually live in Tampa. It is a pee pee soaked heck hole but itís my home. There is very little culture here. Everything is spread out and hard to get to. There is little to no nature almost every major road is a never ending series of strip centers and parking lots. Bike riding in the city is not bad if you stick to the side streets and avoid certain areas at rush hour. Davis Island and Bayshore are good for bike riding. There are a few MUP trails and they are pretty nice too. I graduated from USF and I really liked my experience there, but it is a commuter college so if you want a real college environment they donít have it. We are always waiting for the big one to hit (and you thought Katrina was bad).

I agree with one of the earlier post. I would throw Gainesville into the mix. Itís kind of a party school but it is more like a small town than a city with many state parks near by. You are also centrally located to either coast. It is fairly laid back but somewhat sophisticated. Too many pseudo hippies however.

Welcome back Lucky!

Only been to Fla. once, for a short weekend and stayed drunk enough that I do not remember that much about it.
