are tax returns / financial records from a 501 (c) public?

title pretty much says it all.

I'm trying to do a little research to satisfy an itch I have about a nonprofit organization.

Are the tax returns and financial documents public of a 501(c)? I assume I just file a FOIA to obtain them.
More specifically, its a 501 (c)6 organization (business league/professional organization)

Who do I file a FOIA to? the organization or to the IRS?

organization is who the FOIA would go to. However, not all information can be FOIA'd
We cannot solve problems with the same level of consciousness that created them. A.E.

If its a publicly traded company then the info is public. Otherwise its no less invasive a search than
you trying to get your next door neighbor's return just because you are curious.

You could just ask the finance officer of the organization. I belong to two organizations this would apply to, and our policy on both is that if someone asks, our finance officers (or equivalent) will be happy to take an appointment and review the records with the person inquiring.

501c3's have to register with the state they are located in - search that state's web site for the appropriate department, and you might find what you're looking for.... In WV, it's the Secretary of State's office, and you can download the annual statement & financials.
