effin' airlines

I've been out of town and away from my bike for a whole week which would be bad enough.

However, I was forced to take an extra 120 mile leg when I flew out on business (I would have preferred to drive this to avoid a connection) because even though I would have been on the exact same plane, I would have been charged several hundred dollars more if cut my journey short. Naturally, my plane back is several hours late and due to be canceled so I won't make it back tonight.

Tomorrow, I have to meet all day with people who are flying in to see me, but I won't be there until a few hours late at best. At least I am confirmed for that. The airlines whine about fuel costs and insist on me riding a trip I don't even want. Then I get stranded. Being a long time traveler, this is hardly the first time this has happened to me.

On the way out, they way overbooked and they couldn't find enough takers for $400 vouchers plus hotel. Interestingly enough, there is no compensation if they just strand you halfway through your trip even though you still need a place to sleep.

I hate flying even though I do it all the time. Planes, trains, and automobiles was meant to be a comedy, but it's a bit too close to reality.

Flying has definitely gotten worse over the last eight years, I try to avoid it completely if at all possible...

They certainly are. I believe Southwest is the only one who barely managed to squeeze out some sort of a profit. Everybody else is operating at loss.

I honestly don't mind flying. I go into it with the mindset that there's tradeoffs for the convenience, and that having a bad attitude about it isn't going to help.

Of course, I don't fly often, and I've only once been stranded in a city far away from home overnight

Airline deregulation and the subsequent subsidization was the downfall of good airline transportation.

I avoid flying commercial wherever possible. If it's too far to drive, and less than 4 hours in my plane, I'll just fly myself. Any farther than that, and it becomes more economical to fly commercial. That gives me about a 500 mile (bike miles, not plane miles. Plane miles are bigger than bike miles by 720 feet) radius where I'll just drive to the little airport by my house, rent a plane, and.... take off.. (pun yeah I know)...

I *hate* flying commercial.

If you have flexibility in your schedule, delays are no big deal since it doesn't matter if you arrive one day earlier or later. In a business context, this can cost huge money because people have to come from different places, and there are salaries, facilities, and other expenses that make it impractical to plan for lots of time doing more than a few hours of nothing. Missing flights is also a big deal if you're trying to get to a funeral, medical emergency, or something else that doesn't give you much slack.

I did get upgraded to first class which is nice, but I'd rather ride in a cargo container if it got me to where I needed to be.

I almost always get a first class bump. And almost always would rather fly in a cargo container if it got me there faster. First class is overrated on short trips. Anything over 4 hours is almost a must.

Soldiers get a much higher weight allowance than civilians and are given vouchers or compensation by the military for baggage expenses. The media created that story, let us not perpetuate it please.

Also, American agreed to waive any third bag charges, even though the money was being paid by the US government, not the soldiers, when all is said and done.

Ironically, they're the only ones that treat people like people, and not cattle.

My wife and I have had the worst luck with airlines lately.

October 2006- On our way back from Taipei, we connected in Hong Kong, for a direct flight to JFK. Take off, and an engine fails. We make a safe emergency landing back in Hong Kong (for which I was very grateful!). 8 hours later, we are on a new plane. 18 hours later, land at JFK, to find out they dont have a gate for us. We sit on the tarmac for 3 hours. Pull into the gate, get into the customs hall, and the bag carousel breaks. Takes 3 hours to get us our luggage.

Last Month, my wife flies out of Newark to MN via Detroit. Delayed, and sits on the tarmac for 3 hours before taking off from EWR. Misses the last connection out of Detroit, spends the night in the airport.

3 Weeks ago- on the way out for our cycling tour, we are the on the runway, about to take off, when due to a storm, the airport shuts down. Due to lightening, etc.. we sit on the tarmac for 4-5 hours. Flight cancels. We get rescheduled on a new flight the next morning at 6am. Bag check is closed until 3am (and we had to recheck our bags) so we get to sit out in the check in area until 3am (turns out to be until 5am). Just make the 6am flight, to find it too, has canceled. Finally get out (by going standby) at 7:30am, and get to our destination 24 hours late. Oh, but our luggage ended up in Ohio (we were going to Montana).

On our way home, the airline "couldn't find the crew" (how the hell do you lose a CREW?!?!) and thus we miss our last connection out of MSP and spend the night there. Luckily this time, our luggage (and bikes) make it just fine.

So yeah, I hate flying right now!

aisle seats are better than window because there is more space available. fatties should sit in cargo, so they cant hog other people's armrests and drip their fatsweat into others' virtual boundaries

My favorites are the seasoned fat flyers. The ones that bring their own seatbelt extenders.

Apparently, there are games pilots will play -- I overheard the airline staff talking about that last night. I didn't catch all the details, but the gate people were clearly bothered that they were having people sit in planes on the tarmac for hours (as well as waiting at future stops in other airports) when they knew it would eventually be canceled.

I had a delay in January that lasted (iirc 8 hours). If it was 2 minutes longer, everyone on the flight were entitled to 1,000€. I'm fairly certain they fudged the numbers.

back OT - airlines definitely are sucking, and sucking hard these days. i.e. in november the baggage allowance on a klm flight from amsterdam to bangkok was 30 kg. As of January it was 20 kg. Ridiculous. On top of that, take a look at the breakdown of fees. The taxes and surcharges are more than the actual fare of the flight.
