I'd recommend 250 laps at least.

    hah!
I grew up watching moto cross.

I was a bit too old by the time it occurred to someone to try it with bicycles. I had never seen it done before. Underwhelming.

Always has been pretty much a sprint event.

Yeah, it was a yawn fest...

The crashes were even under whelming I was expecting real gore for a sport with full face helmets, goggles and all of those pads...

All I thought was they delayed THAT for rain? I was really curious in advance when I heard that the events only lasted 40 seconds.

At least they pedaled a couple of times as they were picking up speed down the starting hill.

I am sure it takes skill, but not an Olympic event, especially with the need for an elaborate one use facility like that. With all of the heats and the finals it must have been what 10 minutes of rip roaring action?

The cool thing about BMX is that all it really takes is a $200 bike,(yes, you can spend more, but you can get a decent new bike for that) an empty dirt lot and your body. It is more exciting to watch the build up, see the guys go through the heats and get to the final. Is it an Olympic event, not sure, but I would rather watch BMX than ping pong, or air pistols.

I think that BMX was done an injustice by the way it was covered. No lead up, no real intro into the riders, no prelims. Nothing. If they did the same thing with a swimming event, or a track event, how exciting would that be?

I thought it was pretty exciting. I've spent some time on the dirt track, but it takes some serious balls to do what these guys are doing.

My gripe isn't so much that it isn't potentially an interesting sport, just that it takes such a specialized venue for an event that is over in an instant (or several instants if you count the prelims).

Until they can come up with other events that can share the venue, it doesn't seem reasonable for a host city to spend a million dollars (or whatever) to build the stadium for 20 minutes of racing... even if every second of every round is telecast.

For the track and field events, or even beach volleyball, there is extensive activity over the course of days... BMX, 5 minutes per round. Thanks for coming, be back tomorrow for the finals.

I am sure it is something that they may be able to overcome, but from what I saw of the venue, as it was laid out, it was useful for only one thing. Maybe if they add some X games style activity as well, they could take better advantage of the home country's investment.

Maybe some freestyle, or half pipe in addition to the supercross races. Acrobatics go over big at the Olympics.

Does not have to be a facility just for BMX. All you need is an open area, some loads of dirt and maybe a skid steer loader. They hold truck pulls, arena cross, etc inside all kinds of venues all the time.

Granted, the track there seemed to have some sort of covering in the big turns, but I bet the dirt is removed soon and they have tennis courts or whatever underneath there.

CBC showed all the prelims, from indiv time trials for seeding through successive heats and on to the end.

NBC may well have done the same, but if they did, it was on one of the ancillary channels, not their main standard def or HD channel, and not during prime time viewing, that I saw.

CBC has no HD at least not on my cable package, that I guess is the tradeoff for watching stuff live.

I say razor blades on the sleeves, spikes on the feet, extra points for every guy you take out.

How about a figure 8 track with jumps at the crossing point, half the group starts on one side, the other half starts on the other side (like pursuit). Ten laps, again extra points for taking guys out at the crossing point.

The ways this event can be improved is limited only by our imaginations.

Watching a bunch of 30 second time trials must have kept viewers on the edge of their seats.

Actually, how many total competitors were there?

I'd like to see you try something like that. I mean you probably like to watch the roadies cycling part which isn't any better if you ask me. The fact that BMX got into the Olympics is a pretty big and more of an Olympic game then shooting guns. If you where in the race you'd understand why it is short, so stop bagging something you've never tried.

Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.

What kind of riding do you do, fuzzy? I always enjoyed getting on the track and getting my butt handed to me by kids who were half my age.

They need to do about 5 lap of that course. It seems like the whole race is decided in the first 100 feet of track.

Its the olympics. They can make any sport look dull. I just hope they never get their hands on skateboarding or downhill racing.
