Really, REALLY, sorry about this

Warning, major vent here. I've never been so mad that my hands are shaking.

SO, here's the story. My fiance and I moved from WI to IL a couple weeks ago.

We're all moved in and such, and wondering where our deposit check is from the last apartment in WI.

They sent it on the 19th, it's the 26th today.

I know this because I spoke with the person A at the management office that owns the apartment. She said she had no forwarding address. I about laughed my a** off when she said that, because I know I gave them my knew address. I gave person B my address the day we were leaving in her office, and also wrote my address on a post it and stuck it on our fridge - as person B requested. So now we're waiting for our check, who knows where it is, BECAUSE THEY SENT IT TO THE ADDRESS WE MOVED FROM!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR!!!! Shouldn't they have called me to get the new one!? Yes, I do have a new cell phone #, but I called person B, left her a message with my new #, and called her again to make sure to talk to her personally, because there's a person C that would easily screw something like that up that works there (maintenance guy that should be fired).

Doesn't it seem funny how some of your hard earned money goes towards somebody else, with nothing to get in return (government, rent, shady people, etc etc). Isn't it funny how they want your money every month, or else. But they can take their sweet a** time getting your deposit back!?!? WOW.

Anyways, sorry about the rant everybody. Thanks for listening. Anybody have any similar stories, or advice? They should send me another check if I don't get this one, correct?!?

Did you file a forwarding address with the Postal Service? If so, it will show up, as if by magic.

I say you move back where you just moved from and ask them to send the check again. Once you get it, then move back to where you where moving to originally. Hope this helps.

FYI - we do have a forwarding with the post office. But who knows if it's going to get here though.

It will... the USPS is actually a very efficient organization. Sure, they lose billions of dollars every year, but they can at least get stuff done.

LOL - good idea.

I know I'm getting upset about nothing - well, sorta nothing, but it just seems like really, really, bad business by not paying attention to my address I gave to them. It just, doesn't seem right. Should I not be upset?

Stuff happens. Save getting upset for important stuff, like the scratch on the top tube of your new bike that you see EVERY time you ride it.

On a lighter note, I start bike commuting tomorrow, maybe I can mash my way out of my frustrations. *Sigh*, it's interesting how thinking about cycling can calm a person down.

If getting upset makes you feel better

In reality, that's the way the world works.
Deposits NEVER come back in a timely manner.
Your paycheck will occasionally go to the wrong address.
Occasionally you will have to cover someone else's job, for no extra money.
Keep in mind, mistakes are generally unintentional. It may be carelessness on someone's part, but you can't stand there and say you have paid attention to every important item you have run across

I just consider deposits part of my rent. If I get anything back, it's a bonus.

I got a partial deposit back because some bushes were dead. I left for a month and asked my landlord if she could water them while I was gone. (she was also mowing the "lawn" as I didn't have anything powerful enough to burn through the weeds.) She told me she would, and did it for a week and then quit. The bushes died. She blamed it on me, and took the cost of the bushes out of my deposit. Whatever...

The USPS rocks hard. They'll get your check to you, no worries.

As a landlord, I usually charge them half of the monthly rent for deposit and return half of that.

I use it to shampoo the rugs, repaint their room (I rent rooms out of my house to students), patch up and repair any holes in the walls of their room, change the locks (make new keys for the still existing renters) and have someone come in to clean and sanitize their bathroom. I do most of the work myself except for the bathroom. I usually have to take a day off of work to do this.

Rent = $600, deposit = $300.

So in other words, they get back about $150. I give it to them the day they turn in the keys which is the same day I inspect.

Sounds a lot more organized than the places I've rented from. I like the way you do business! Meh... I'll be looking for a house soon anyways, renting will be a thing of the past for me!

Just call them every day until you receive your deposit. Being annoying usually works really well.

interesting, i thought there were laws requiring the security deposit to only be used for things beyond normal wear and tear. maybe its different in your state. some of that stuff may be in a grey area.

Sadly enough, most places will shampoo carpet, etc etc... and take from your deposit. It's happened at the last couple places I've lived at.

i agree. hole in the wall is definitely not a grey area. but something like repainting might be.

hole in the wall, yes. Holes from a nail used to hang a picture, etc. I believe are within the "wear and tear" clause. i.e., one swipe of spackle, paint and you're done. Routine cleaning? not so sure.

Rest assured, I am complying with the laws of rental property. I've seen too many landlords supply houses that are not fit to rent. I am only charging half of the monthly rent for deposit when I have the right to charge a full months AND keep it should the room be left in bad condition. Keeping $150 from the deposit when someone lives there for three years is not a whole lot. The rent I charge for a large house fully furnished is very low considering the area. My motive is to help out the students who want a clean quiet environment to live.
