I need a new sound system. Have at you, audophiles!

I needs a new system. My old one is 8 years old and the speakers are dying. T'were Altec Lansing ADA745 (4.1, IMO a *****in system considering they came free with my comp).

The old specs:
# 95 watts total power output
# Frequency Response 30Hz-18KHz
# Magnetically shielded 3-inch satellite speakers
# 5.25-inch driver subwoofer in sealed wood enclosure
# 51 watts subwoofer power output

I want something similar or better in sound quality, for cheap. Keep it under $100 and I'll be happy. Suggestions?

Sounds like you're looking for a set of speakers, not a "system."

I'm pretty happy with the pair of M-Audio monitors I picked up a while back. It's tough to find a nice pair of computer speakers without a crummy, pointless subwoofer included.

Logitech Z2200 is supposed to be nearly the best money can buy for under 100 dollars.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z2200.../dp/B0000C20T5

I bought Klipsche Promedia 2.1's, and I am impressed and completely satisfied with them. The retail is over 100, but it can be found for less.

I still have my Altec Lansing 621 (100W woofer, 35W satellites, 200W peak) from a long time ago which is limited by my creative Audigy 4 and sounds better on a chaintech AV-710.
Had a 641 and that was some of the best audio I've ever heard, right next to the 621, except it broke.

the crap speakers boast high power ratings, but lack a lot of fidelity because they use 2x in between all range speakers and the woofer is cheap.
satellite power of 1/3 or 1/4 of the sub-woofer and have tweeters AND midrange are least I would expect from quality speakers.

Putting "audiophile" in the title and then telling us you want to replace a set of computer speakers with a $100 budget is a cruel joke. To an audiophile, $100 is the budget in price-per-foot for good speaker cables and interconnects. In fact, I'm so insulted I'm considering hiring a PI to track you down and slap you across the face with a piece of raw fish.

What is the difference between audiophile speakers and other stuff (granite stands, $500 wood knobs, $100 an inch for silver wires) versus studio stuff (monitors aimed at a flat response)?

I rather have monitors that give a flat response across the board, but that's just me.

I have the Logitec x-540 and I am happy with them. I spent $50 on them after a MIR, and they are nice. They come close to the audio quality of my Bose headphones, and the sub can move some serious air. My feet sit 2-3 feet a way and I can feel quite a bit of air moving. And it is 5.1, although only 70 watts for the sataliets and another 70 watts for the woofer, so you aren't going to be waking up the neighbors across the block with it, but it does the job well for a great price.

Plus it has a wired remote, which is nice.

I lack the exact English expression here, but studio monitors are also designed to be very accurate in placing instruments "on stage", as well as providing almost clinical info on each instrument. It's a bit like a bag of groceries - ingredients are there for you to inspect, but it's not yet the meal you plan to make out of it.

That said, I'd take a pair of good studio monitors any day over my current Wharfedale 7.1s.

To OP: I realise you're talking about computer speakers, but still - you should look into something that's still up and running after more than 8 years. My system's core parts (amp, tuner) are 1987ish. Tuner is nearly dead, especially the display, but the amp is doing just fine. The speakers I replaced about 5 years ago, but the old ones (1987) weren't dying or anything.

P.S. Nothing quite illustrates the depth to which sonic reproduction has fallen quite as effectively as a thread where some college kid thinks a $100 electronics purchase constitutes and 'audio system' that requires input from 'audiophiles'.

God help us.

This thread does get the Johnny Lunchpail Award for 2008. We're ending the competition early, nothing will top this.

Just get a really good set of headphones....you can listen to any music with crystal clarity and it'll cost 1/2 what a speaker system will cost.

He asked for help from AUDOPHILES, not audiophiles according to the thread title.

+1
I bought Audio Technica ATH-AD700 and a reasonably high end sound card. This provides outstanding sound for just over 200 dollars.
