OK Foo peeps - something different - I need a Vet Foo Peep!!!

One of the two semi feral cats in the household bit my big cat's neck last Wednesday. Felt the wound on Thursday - which had scabbed over - when I scratched him and thought nothing of it.

Friday - came home from work and was rather horrified as my cat had evidently been scratching at his wound and so now I saw exactly what it was - a little less than dime sized - BITE DOWN TO THE MEAT freaking bite!!! -- I mean no hair, skin or fatty undersides, etc. Meat.

    grrrrrrrrr

I had some antibiotics from a previous boo boo (tube was 3 months old) from another animal and so I cleaned it out and put a tiny amt on.

Yesterday - wound is oozing - clean it out and repeat

Tonite - wound is not only oozing - but it's bigger. JHC!!

I've already tossed peroxide on it - and let me tell you what a 15 lb cat can do to you ..... I have marks on my ankle

I understand I should take him to the vet - but his vet is not open till Tuesday afternoon. The wound is now about a dime and a half size and anything I do to clean it out is met with BAD THINGS from him - although I can bring in a third human to hold him - but the worst is that the wound is right in line with his mainline back leg scratch - so he's just doing more reinfecting to it.

    Any suggestions?

OK, upon further review - took two of us to subdue said kitty in a strong towel and realized that the wound is more than we thought. He'll be going off to the vet's tomorrow. My roommates refuse to think that the original wound could be from one of their tiny female cats - and instead think it came from a festering spider bite.

    oh well.

mah poor kitty is laying out on the back porch, his favorite place, and is soooo P'O'd at us.

They'll get him all fixed up tomorrow. Cats are tough little things.

Sounds like to me your cat has an abscess, an infected lump filled with blood and pus, usually associated with a cat bite.

I usually will handle that myself, in order to avoid a HUGE bill from the vet. I'm not saying you should but I'll let you know what I do.

    1. I trim the hair around the area with a child's scissor (rounded tip) to avoid any hair getting into the wound.

    2. I get a bowl of HOT water and a white or light colored face cloth.........I hold the hot damp towel on the wound and hold it with firm pressure till the towel gets cold. I will rinse and do that several times till the scab (if there is one) softens up. Slowly convince the scab to come up. You need the wound open.

    3. I gently press around the would to let the yuckiness drain. It will be pinkish (blood and pus). I do it with the cloth in place, to "wick" the funk out. Keep doing that until there is absolutely no coloration at all on the cloth (hence the WHITE face cloth).

    3. Apply hydrogen peroxide.

I do this about four times a day - in the morning, a couple of times during the day and before bedtime. A couple of days doing this and there will be no more pus forming because there is no infection inside to multiply. You would be able to tell because the lump will diminish.

The idea is to drain the pus. That is what they will do when you go to the vet. They will insert a tube and let it hang out of your cat for a couple of days. It will be a mess and you have to clean it with a warm wet cloth anyway...

Not saying that's what you should do (not even sure it's an abscess) but that's how I help my kitty over his owie.

This is an extreme case but here is what the vet would do:

    Caution!! Yucky and gross pics!!

The "lampshade" might irritate the wound since it's on the neck. Unless of course it's lower, more toward the chest. Cat's are amazing gymnasts.

OH DEAR LAWD!!!!! WTH WAS IN THAT CAT!!!!!!!!! BLARG!!!

OTOH ---- finally reached a friend who raises dogs - and practices animal husbandry and does most things herself --- and so she came over, shaved mah cat and wiped it down and peroxided it (it's up to the size of nearly a quarter now cause he won't leave it alone) - while I held this big huge angry cat down (actually I ended up half laying on it), then gooped him up with an antibiotic cream and then another jelly like stuff she gets from a horse retailer - that is a slight pain killer and then put a mini pad (of the woman's variety) on it and lightly bandaged it around his neck. He's in cage at the moment and very unhappy. He needs a cone on his head as he promptly ripped the bandage off.

push the lampshade low enough and use duct tape to hold it in place, and well the kitty won't get into any trouble when you leave it alone for the day.

Teh kitty had a bad bite on the leg a couple of weeks ago that had started to swell and get really icky. Plus he wouldn't stop bothering it, so it just got worse. We'd just treat it with alcohol swab and neosporin every day--teh kitty did not like the taste of neosporin, so he stopped licking his wound, phew. It took three people to do this the first couple of times because he was struggling like hell, but as he got used to the routine, I could do it myself if I pinned him down with one arm. He seemed to know it was for his own good.

I'm thinking that's going to be my mode of operation as the wound is right on the neck and cone would probably not work. So hoping the good taste of neosporin will be enough to make him leave it alone. Will see when I get home...

Hang the cat by its tongue until the wound heals. I also like the duct tape idea that MV had.

My friend suggested putting socks over his back paws and securing them somehow. Realizing that we're probably looking at duct tape and the fact that already unhappy kitteh wouldn't work.

HEY!!! I found something kinda cool! And look at the gouges out of it - so it stays!! I bet I can make something like this!

I spent 170 bucks on the same type infection for my kitty earlier this year....That makes him a 400 buck Siamese.

I tried all the same stuff for a day or so before taking him to the vet.
He come in one morning and his ear was torn up pretty good, we doctored it as best we could. It scabbed over and we didn't think much of it for a few days, then one day the abscess burst open. I took him in and cleaned out the wound, (it's not cool looking into a cats ear, I didn't realize they could seperate like that) the next day off to the vet.
They knocked him out trimmed on his ear and put in 4 stitches and presto chango he was a cat again. I removed his stitches a week later and he's just like new except one ear isn't as long as before.
I hope your kitty has had it's FeLV shot....I lost one 8 years ago to the same kind of incident.
