They were probably talking about WiMAX (aka 4G). At least this is what the Verizon rep talked to me about when I told him I was thinking of switching to AT&T for an iPhone. He had no clue what he was talking about though, (I used to be the head of strategy for a cellular chip company), so it was fun to mess with him a little (I wasn't too mean )

4G is a long way away whether it's called WiMAX or 3G-LTE (Long Term Evolution). In theory both of these will offer 40-100Mbits to the handset. Now the basestations aren't even close to handling 1-2 Mbits to the handsets today (GSM-3G is capable of up to 14.1 with the current standards, and handsets capable of 8Mbits should be shipping soon). So even if carriers change to the new standards (which they won't anytime soon), the infrastructure will lag for a while still ...

If/When I can get 100Mbits to my handset then I'll be in wireless heaven

Just wondering how well you like these phones after almost a year. It's time for my upgrade, and would love to hear your gripes.

Only thing I don't like about mine is that it's too easy to unlock when in a pocket. I accidentally dialed my manager at 4:45 am on a Saturday while walking out into the woods to go turkey hunting....at least she was understanding. I've seen it half compose garbage text messages to contact and end up on just about any screen. Needs a much better unlock setup.

But that's my only gripe Love the phone.

Don't hold your breath. This comes out 2 or three times a year.

After a year I've been through three LG Dares...

The first problem I had was just reception. I live in a saddle between two hills and reception with any phone has always been spotty. I was fine with the phone because other than that it worked great, and I don't rely on my cell for anything too critical. My wife however disagreed and insisted I turn it in for a new phone. After jumping through all the hoops, I got a new phone...and it was defective. All replacement phones through Verizon are refurbs, so we jump through the hoops again and I get a working unit...that still doesn't work as well as the first one.

Tiring of that game I installed a cell extender antenna on my roof. Now I get reception in one room of my house, but I'd have to spend another $60 or so for either a longer cable to get the base unit closer to my office, or upgrade the indoor antenna to a directional type.

The phone itself blanks out in direct sunlight, I don't use most of the features and services, and the screen protector gets torn up when I put it in my pocket. I'd trade it in again if I thought I could get a slimmer phone with better reception, but I don't really care enough to do so.

The Dare is good for my needs, but it's no iPhone. Verizon's network is so superior around here to AT&T that the iPhone isn't a real option.

There is a VERY strong likelihood that Verizon will have iPhones in 2010. I doubt Apple will continue to tie itself to AT&T's lame network forever. If that happens, I might get an iPhone. For what I use it for the Dare works OK. It's annoying in some respects, but once you get used to it, it's not so bad. Better than the Razr. I love the compact dimensions and form factor.

I have had my phone for 8 months. I agree that the touch screen unlocks too easily, causing several "purse dialing" episodes for me.

At times the touch screen is difficult to activate when on the internet. For example, if I'm entering a username or password, I have to touch the field box on the screen multiple times in order for the touch screen to activate it. For sending email and all other internet activities I much prefer my iPod Touch, as it has a better user interface.

The camera is also a little annoying, mine somehow keeps switching to video mode and I don't know why.

As a phone the Dare is fine, I have no problems with dropping calls or not hearing people clearly. As soon as Verizon gets the iPhone I am switching to that.

Sad to say...but I've also considered an iPhone.

On those occasions where I'm out and about and it would be handy to check my email for an address or pimpslap some trash-talkin' forum nubbin...I don't bother since the Dare's interface is so wonky. The laptop is so much better, but then there's the weight. I've considered a netbook, but that won't fit in a pocket.

Before I drink the iPhone koolaid...I'll have to try one out. At least my son-in-law can get me cost on one if Verizon ever picks them up.

I heard from a guy at the apple store that Verizon doesn't have the iPhone, not because of the network, but because they wanted to install their own proprietary software on it. Software which Apple didn't want because they didn't feel it would line up with the sleekness of the iPhone.

Sounded logical to me, at least. If that's the case, I hope they figure their issues out... I'll stick with my Blackberry though!
