Kasia & I are visiting her family in Poland. Right now, as I type this, the air raid sirens are blasting, commemorating the 69th anniversary of the invasion of Poland. It's a rather eerie experience.

My father-in-law lived through all of that, as a young man. He lost family members and friends, and nearly died himself more than once. At age 89, he does not recall all the details in proper order anymore, but he still tells us about it from time to time.

Yeah. I'm a mod on a WWII Forums, and its amazing how ignorant/pro-Nazi some people are. There also seems to be a correlation between that and how young they are. At any rate, there is still a select few of us who go by the motto 'Lest we forget'.

Reminds me of the "The Green Fields of France" song:

"And I can't help but wonder oh Willy McBride,
Do all those who lie here know why they died,
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause,
Did you really believe that this war would end wars,
Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame,.
The killing and dying it was all done in vain,
Oh Willy McBride it all happened again,
And again, and again, and again, and again..."

I suspect the Poles are a bit more sensitive to it this year given the events in Georgia.

I've been looking to see "Katyn" come around; hopefully didn't miss it.

My F-I-L has no love for Nazis, but considers the Russians to have been far worse. Let us not forget that the Nazis and Russians had a non-aggression pact in place in 1939, and that they both invaded Poland.

True, its hard to discern who was the lesser of the Two Evils (Germany/Russia) though i believe it was the Germans who officially declared war on Poland and set things off - the Russians didn't invade until September 17th.
