Rant...

Hey there, mister window fixer guy! I understand the faster you get from job to job, the more money you can make. I don't want to slow you down, but when you forced me into the gutter yesterday, I was a little put out. I know the road construction turned the bike lane into a car lane, and I know you saw me riding my bicycle, and I know you probably saved some time by nearly sideswiping me, but was the 10 seconds or so you saved through the 300 feet of construction really worth nearly injuring me or maybe worse?

I only ask this because I was on the MUP today, and I came up on a person walking, a person behind jogging, and a cyclist coming the other direction. If I had been like you, I probably should have snuck past the jogger and walker, maybe even force them onto the grass, so I could save those precious few seconds. I didn't, though. And do you know why, mister window fixer guy? I understand that there are many users on the MUP who all differ greatly in speed and maneuverability. I don't "own" the MUP more than any other user, just as you don't "own" the road more than me.

So next time you come across a cyclist "in your way," touch that brake pedal. It's ok to slow down and get behind a cyclist. You may be held up for a number of seconds, but you also may avoid an accident that could ruin someone else's life.

And since mister window fixer guy isn't reading this forum...**** YOU *******

Reminds me of two things recently...

In another forum there was a thread about a tour group where a person was killed a while back. One of the comments on the article reporting the death said that bikes don't belong on the road because they can't do the speed limit, and that all a driver can do is either plow into the bike or cross the center line and hit oncoming traffic head on.

It didn't even occur to the moron that there was an option to slow down until it was safe to pass.

Part of the problem is that people at one level know that the speed limit is the fastest speed they are supposed to go, but in practice treat it as the minimum speed. If you tell people that a bicycle going at 1/2 the speed limit is actually more legal than a car going 1 mph over the speed limit, it takes a while for it to sink in, if it does at all. I have had this discussion with a couple of family members with similar blank stares when they couldn't come up with a logical argument, and had to rely on "Bicycles just don't belong on the road."

Also, I haven't heard any details yet, but the local news this morning had a report of a cycling fatality. The brief report was of a cyclist hit on the road while a car was making a turn... Sounds like another "I didn't see him."

I am glad your incident was minor in comparison, but share your outrage!

I was almost rear ended (while on my bike) Sunday, by a person not paying attention, and then this happened yesterday. I have maybe a handful of scary ass biking stories, but 2 in the span of 3 days is a little much for me. It really sketched me out.

Mods, please move this if it needs to be moved. Thanks.

I don't think that every time someone has an incident it needs to be banished to A&S.

This is a chat among foosters.

Yesterday some old dbag in a Mercedes thought he'd be funny and cut me off and stomp on his brakes and then when I turned to the other lane he'd get in front of me and keep on doing that. When I find you, you are toast.

Window-fixer guy a private contractor, or does he work for a company? Something ID-like on his truck?

Yep, love folks like that; it's why my tubular-keyed krypto chain is still on my bike -- to light up some dingleberry who thinks his car is an exclamation point.

Take the lane wussyboy.

The shopping center that our shop is in has a lane down the middle of parking lots on either side. Even though the lane has a name, it's not actually a street, it's a lane through the parking lot. No speed limit signs are posted, but every yahoo seems to try and get their vehicle into third gear down this lane...and it pisses me off, especially when I'm letting a little kid take a test ride in front of the shop.

Lately when I'm out running errands on the shop bike, I have intentionally taken the middle of this lane. I can't wait til the first yahoo gives me a hard time for it and I can lay it out for them that they're in a parking lot, not a highway, and that the speed limit for a parking lot is 5MPH.
