How much would you pay for this BUG?

He is asking $3500, unlike the bus guy.
My only thing is this car is PINK. Pheard would love it, but I'm not too sure about myself.
I'm also not diggin the Porsche rims too much, even though I have to admit they look better on this bug than any other bug I've seen so far.
Check it out...

1965 VW Beetle.

I'll get more pics later.

Hard to say. I have this idea that 3500 is bluebook for lots
of reliable used cars that are much newer.

Some people don't understand.
If I wanted a newer car, (a plastic POS without personality) I would buy a newer car for thirty-five hundred and have myself something reliable(ish) that will die anyway in a few years and that I would hate.

I want a bug because it has personality, has its own little quirks and stuff. I am trying to find out if this bug is in sound condition (and approved by the FOO)

Edit: That didn't make any sense. But it doesn't have to, cause I'm cool.

Yeah, the gas mileage on a properly tuned bus is around 17 all around. The gas mileage on a properly tuned bug is <29 all around MPG. I know I can charge my friends for gas when I'm driving them around, but after high school and college I'm stuck with a van the size of a small moon and crappy gas mileage vs buying a bug and hauling less friends around in that but having a car with decent gas mileage and good reliability after school.

I thought you said you wanted a car to work on....

The adults are only thinking in a practical way. You are asking for opinions and when we tell you something that you don't like you get upset. Perhaps you should ask people to only post if they have good things to say, nevermind trying to help you.

But I think it's hella cute.

how's the engine? It is a way better deal than that POS van you posted...if the engine is in good shape, and interior.

I am, by age, an adult, but I completely understand where you're coming from. Reliable, new stuff can really be boring sometimes. No personality. I've never owned anything newer than my most recent acquisition, the 1986 Ford.

I do want a car to work on, he sent me this from my wanted ad...

I do not get upset, but I do disagree with his opinion. If I didn't want this kind of car I wouldn't be posting a thread about one, would I? I just don't get why somebody would post a suggestion like "buy a different car" in a thread about a specific car.

I'm not discouraging criticism, but I'm just saying that it is kind of dumb to post something like what kaiju-velo said in a thread about a specific car.

And about reliability, old vee dubs are so reliable that they've already lasted 40 years, what makes you think that they won't last another 60?

My posts don't make any sense tonight.

Maxi, did you ask him to send pics of the interior and engine? How close is he to you? Enough for you to swing by?

Go with the veedub if it slams your hood.
We have different priorities for cars--
neither is better. Personally I could
care less about cars other than functionality
and mileage

He said he wouldn't mind driving halfway to sell, so I assume he can't be too far from me.
I did ask him for more pics, he said he'll have them soon.

...and who is SHORTY?

If I were to get another car I'd get this. Based on the years and prices $3500 is too much for your bug unless it is mint.

Around 2000 or so, I sold a '63 bug that my father and I had initially restored to show quality. While it was no longer in its restoration-fresh condition when sold (it was a daily driver) and despite the fact that I had yanked out the custom built, balanced and blueprinted 1776 cc engine that I had put in it and replaced it with a stock 1200 cc engine, it was still more attractive and in better shape -- judging by those pictures alone -- than that car. I sold it for $2800.

The reason I sold it for so cheap was because I really wanted some money to put into a '60 Impala I had just bought. I actually even sold the Impala for cheaper than I should have when I bought a '55 Chevy pickup to restore.

I guess my point -- and I think I might actually have one here somewhere -- is to take your time and continue looking until you find one that fits what you want and is reasonably priced. During that process, you might actually find someone like me who is more interested in making a quick sell than getting absolute top dollar. While I searched for the perfect restoration-ready Volkswagen (I ended up paying $300 for it), my impatient friends paid ridiculous amounts of money for bugs that were rusted out, had tired engines or were just trash cars covered in half-assed paint jobs.

If you know you already hate the pink paint, I see no reason why it would ever be worth $3500 to you (and, quite frankly, that paint scheme is pretty ugly). Keep in mind that even if you have a friend that can spray it for you for free (Iím lucky enough to have a family friend that paints show cars professionally), the price of materials alone to do the job right can be pretty costly. And if youíre planning on restoring one, keep in mind that just because itís a Volkswagen doesnít mean itís going to be cheap.

Make sure there's no structural rust issues (ie. heater channels). You can always repaint.

Check out www.thesamba.com if you haven't yet...

Aircooled VWs are very simple machines, but they do have quirks... both good and bad.

Another thing... A split window bus will always be more expensive than a more common mid 60s bug.

A couple of my friends have bugs but they are the Baja racer style ones. Open engine case, knobby tires, etc.

That one is pretty cool, but I would paint it a different color. Just make sure all mechanical stuff is working semi-well and that it isn't rusted out. My dad had an old 240Z that had rust on the door panels and I'll be damned if that stuff didn't spread like cancer. We ended up replacing everything but the hood.

Note: You said you wanted a semi-reliable car. Unless your willing/inclined to do a lot of work on your vehicle then a classic is NOT the way to go. A buddy of mine had (still has) a '72 nova in high school and he worked on that thing everyday and drove it maybe every other week. The new cars may be "boring" but I can guarantee you that in college reliable and cheap transportation is going to be VERY important.

I would pay $0 dollars for any VW...but then again, I'm the wrong person to ask.

Ask someone that likes cheap, crappy cars...against all logic.
