hydroponic garden

I am thinking of trying to grow some tomatoes in my sun room over the winter. I am thinking of doing this with a small hydroponic set up using a small pump, an auto siphon, and vermiculite. Anyone ever try a setup like this? How was the result? I know it can be done on a large scale, but I'm talking about 2 tomato plants, and maybe some lettuce or mustard greens.

Ok, now we now what MV's "side-project" really is. I had a friend that grew "tomatoes" all year round. He had a really nice set of grow lamps. He would circulate 16 plants through this system. 16 plants under the grow lights, 16 just planted, and 16 ready to plant. His harvest usually happened every month and a half and had a really nice yield. Many people thought his "tomatoes" were the best in town and he would usually be able to get rid of his "tomato" stash less than a week after harvest.

The main issue with "tomatoes" is the smell. He had a upstairs he sealed off with thick plastic sheeting. When over at his house, the smell of "tomatoes" was not to be found.

Hydroponics is just overblown...

I got 1 roma planted from seeds, 1 brandywine from seeds, and actually have 1 of each plant that I started this spring which have not really grown due to lack of rain and sunlight (silly neighbor stopped trimming his privet hedge and it got like 20ft tall. ). So I'm thinking of bringing those in and trying hydroponics with them.

Treedude is using aquaponics. Best suited for outdoors, as I don't really have a supply of live fish in my house. I would like to use the set up outside next year though with my goldfish pond.
