I think i'm going to turn down this job if i get it

I'm at my moms which is about 90 mins away from where my g/f lives. I have an interview tomorrow for a job that i don't really care about, but could really use the money. I'm pondering how i am going to see my g/f enough throughout the week given that we would both be working and live so far away. And then i'm thinking about the fact that i wouldn't be able to work for the paper anymore or work on **** at my dads.

I guess i'm just not a money driven guy...

I have ALWAYS felt that money is nothing compared to family. I've turned down jobs because I would have to relocate (to Atlanta, Georgia! )

Follow your heart, Timmy. But go to the interview just to know you did.

It's a financial aid adviser position with DeVry. Nothing special, but it would be enough to pay off a lot of my loans and save enough loot to relocate when the lady is done with grad school in 2 years.

I think i would get bored with the job pretty quickly (see, i'm already talking myself out of it) but i would get to take free online classes, i'd have insurance, and all that jazz...

I've made it through 2 of 4 interviews, only 20 of us left and they are hiring 10. Something about them growing their online sector at 10% per year blah blah i don't care...cubicle work blah blah blah...

If i could find something downtown i could just take a 7am train downtown (there i go again talking myself out of it).

You mean, like, loosing 7 of the last 8? Good thing our competition is the rest of the NL central

Timmy is there any way that you can try out this job, get the training and see how it goes? If not you can always have the gift that they gave you (knowledge) and take it with you to further yourself closer to home.

If you end up liking it, you will find ways to make it work.

Well, i found the position through a recruiting agency and this is a position in which i'm on a sort of 3-month long probationary period. Because of the importance of the job to the people i'd be serving they want to make sure i can do it correctly before hiring me full time. So in that sense, it could be a 3 month long trial. Problem is, i can't afford to be out of work 3 months from now because 3 months from now those student loan payments start kicking in in the...mandatory fashion...

No. It's more for them but i would get paid, but it would certainly allow me to leave after that period without feeling i dooped them.

did you just graduate and thats why the loan payments will start coming up? Personally, I'd put your job/future career and being able to pay off those loans ahead of seeing the girlfriend more than just the weekends. when you both work full-time it'll be difficult anyway unless you live together or relatively close to each other.

What other options do you have? get a job near her and move out there? where is that? and where will she want to be when she graduates? Sometimes you have to make some sacrifices now to put yourself in a better position later. Or maybe I'm just a jerk

90 minutes is definitely doable (especially for a 3 month probationary period!) If you have a strong relationship you're going to be just fine. I always say, you can do anything for a year but you're only looking at a few months for sure.

After a night of sleep, we can handle it...and with this job i can take her out on the weekends

It's worth a shot.

Just to clarify, due to the fact that niether of my parents could really help with school, they both are encouraging me to live with them while i work, for at least a year, to put that money towards my loans rather than living. My dad lives about 15 mins from her (same town) my mom lives in the burbs...about an hour and a half away depending on traffic.

This job is literally a 10 min drive from my moms place.

I don't know how good of an opportunity this job is, but I don't think I'd let a girlfriend hold me back, at this point in my life at least.

well if you're living with ma working during the week.. can you still go stay with the gf on weekends?

I did that for my first 6 months or so out of school until I moved out again. lived with the rents during the week, spent 3/4 weekends with my bf (who was in college also exactly 90 minutes away). He'd come visit 1 weekend/month at my parents'. Its completely doable! Especially for a trial period of a few months- and if you're dedicated, you'll be able to pack rat away a ton of money during that time living with ma. I assume it even comes with a meal plan?

true, but thats dependent on whether you have 15k to be cut to start with. if he's not working full-time now, I'd say something is better than nothing. Then you can worry about things like if its what you want to do for a career, or will it help you get experience for the career you want, etc.

If this job has more advantages than disadvantages, then obviously consider it. Obviously, if it's the other way around, then keep looking. If you don't want to really do it, then you may not perform well if (or when) you actually get the position.

From a personal perspective, I wouldn't let a relationship hold me back either, since I believe things work themselves out if they were meant to...but not everyone thinks the same. Do what you think is right, but be smart about it.

Good luck!

I made a mistake in my college major, little did I realize Electrical Engineering Technology = Field Service.

TQ,

Weren't you the one ragging on someone in an earlier thread that they would be limited to middle management...

If so, I thought you were a jerk and too job focused in that thread, and now here you are sounding all human.

I like this side better.

Do the interview either way, the practice will do you good. Don't worry about deciding in advance.

But, do remember that you don't need to see your sweetheart every night as long as you take full advantage of your time with her, and if she is "the one" it will work out.

True, I guess wife material trumps a so-so job.

I really haven't found any wife material. Not even just a little bit.
