TV standards

Here is a story I found at a local news site, The Daily Telegraph.

Police shooting broadcast live
From correspondents in Los Angeles
February 26, 2004
A BURGLARY suspect was shot to death by police after a car chase that ended when he backed his vehicle into their patrol cars, an incident broadcast live on local TV stations.

Police and the district attorney's office were investigating the three officers who fired into the suspect's car.

Police began chasing Nicholas Hans Killinger early on Monday after he allegedly tied up a gas station attendant and stole $US180 ($233).

After a 90-minute chase that was covered by television helicopters, Killinger was shot by Los Angeles police in front of Santa Monica High School. He died about an hour later, authorities said.

"The suspect could have ended this situation at any time," Lieutenant Art Miller told the Los Angeles Times.

"But instead he chose to reverse his car into the officers."

Killinger, 23, rolled backward into two police vehicles when he could not do a U-turn.

The officers fired about 11 rounds into the rear window of his car.

Police spokeswoman Adriana Sanchez said today that several shots hit Killinger.

A post-mortem revealed Killinger died of multiple gunshot wounds, coroner's spokesman David Campbell said.

At least two local news stations broadcast the shooting as it happened, and more than five aired footage.

The Los Angeles district attorney's office and Santa Monica Police Department were investigating the shooting.

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton said investigators would conduct a separate investigation to determine whether the officers followed department guidelines.

What I want to know is how can this stuff be shown on TV? When something as minor as Janet Jacksons boob can cause so much controversy. It seems killing people is OK for TV, just don't show any nudity.

CHEERS.

Dunno... it's ok to show COPS on tv every single week, but a 1 second boob shot will have people running for the hills.

Go figure.

This is the reason I simply don't bother to watch television. The last thing I watched was the English Soccer highlights program on SBS (1-hour) on Monday night. Before that, it was the same thing exactly one week earlier. This forum is far more entertaining, and if I'm not here, I'll just go for a ride.

So, if you want to commit a crime, but don't want to be all over national TV, do it in the nude.

A good friend of mine moved to Pasadina CA just outside of LA. He said you could be sitting there watching ' The Lion King ' or something with your kids and all of a sudden the broadcast will be interupted with late breaking news of a police chase. I think everyone really hopes it ends in a brutal beating or the creme de la creme a shooting. The news announcers aparently look like they are interviewing for the position of movie star as well. If it bleeds it leeds thats the way it is. Boobs or gunshots thats todays "news".

Personally, I would much rather see a pair of attractive boobs than a shooting any day.

While it's indeed an interesting subject, I don't think it's really relevant to cycling. Maybe this thread should be moved.

Actually, when I think about it, the uproar in the media (with all the disapproving remarks by TV personalities) simply replicated the boob incident
by 10,000 times. The people who actually missed the live incident flocked to their TV's to see it over and over again. Then, of course, they remarked how tasteless it was.

Nudity and sex in the Netherlands, German, French and Spanish television and media sells (I'm sure you can add more countries to that last). It doesn't in the USA or AUS (again, there's plenty more to add here).

The latter countries turn to fear mongering news and violent movies/television. Anything that's important to know - violence, crime, scams, terrorists (anyone with a beard) - anything to make you fearful so you buy that more expensive security system, taller fence, strong gate, security screens, semi-auto arms, more comprehensive insurance, mobile phones... Fear mongering and self loathing keeps the economy going.

If people sat home, watched tacky German game shows and occasional tits and bums then I think the most it'll inspire people to do is go down for a drink at the pub/bar. Wouldn't do much for anybody except the microbrewers!

I live in Pasadena. Trust me, every time they show a high speed chase, they ARE showing a boob on TV. And yes, they put it on every single channel.

Maybe if ALL high speed chases ended with a shooting, these idiots would think twice before running. I have NEVER seen one get away.

Plus, why do they always steal a minivan? If I'm going to steal a car and run, I'm going for a Ferarri.

That is why the chase is so long, if they stole something with a little power they would wrap it around a tree about four seconds into the chase. We had one this past month, bunch of teenagers in a stolen car. Trooper hit his lights because the car was weaving. The chase lasted 15 seconds (A quarter of a mile at sixty miles an hour) the estimated speed of the car was near ninety. The kids in the car were killed when the driver ran it off the road IN THE FIRST TURN. The parents, of course, blamed the troop, remember the chase lasted 15 seconds.

That video made the Atlanta news as well. As far as violence on TV goes, all the viewer could see was the cops shooting into the back of the car. Knowing (after the fact) that the perp was killed might make the video more titilating but seeing cops shoot into a car isn't exactly Quentin Terentino (sp?) type violence.
