Vegemite

So, anyone eat it? Or do you prefer Bovril, Oxo, or the like?

I've had marmite which is supposed to be extremely similar. It's good stuff. Put it on crackers, mix it into oatmeal (or whatever hot breakfast cereal), spread it on bread, etc...

I just wish i could find a steady/reliable supply of it here in southern california. I usually have to go to the specialty markets (Cost Plus World Market) to find it and even then it's not always there...

In general, it seems that Marmite fans can't stand Vegemite, and Vegemite fans can't stand Marmite.

I can't stand either.

Too salty, and it reminds me too much of bacterial growth media from the lab.

You either love the stuff or hate it. My mom grew up eating marmite. Me, I think they're both revolting.

Dunno, grows on ya. When I was in a hot climate and the bod needed salt, we'd put it on fresh avos and get the salt & fat the bod craved...

Useless trivia:
In Australia & NZ, Marmite is different from the UK stuff. Some other company has the rights
to the name and it is a different product.

What the UK Marmite is called there is "My Mate"

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only science geek who thinks of BYE broth when someone mentions Marmite.

And to whomever mentioned Bovril... Another ewww for us lab geeks who've worked with things like bovine lung PMF extract or bHLE.

That makes me think of my veterinarian uncle who says he wont eat strawberry ice cream
because is looks just like something he sees in surgery.

I like Marmite. I think the stuff we get in Canada is the same as the British Marmite. It tastes like super-concentrated soya sauce to me. I haven't done anything more creative than put a teeeny little schmear of it on buttered toast. Avocadoes, eh?

They are both dark brown, thick, salty food spreads, made from yeast extract left over after beer brewing.

yeah I put it on buttered toast. Supposed to be great on cinnamon/raisin bagel, but I don't swing that way in the first place.

Doesn't appear that I will likely try any of these in the near future. Yucko.

Pretty much bacterial growth media from a brewer...
