one day at a time, but...

So, I'm taking things one day at a time. This out-of-state move clearly has a lot of things running through my head and now the ddition of my father's illness- considering my family's currently overwhelmed with other discussions, thought I'd get some ideas rolling in Foo. Or maybe I'm just venting... either way.

    • My start date in CO is 10/22.
    • I need to have movers picking up about 10 days prior.
    • I'm trying to sublet my apartment (this is a whole nother topic I've not yet had time to rant, but my lease buyout is topping out around 1.5x my relocation stipend, not even including actual moving expenses)

Worst case family scenarios:That this is an extended situation for my dad, or that or I'd be leaving behind my mom to take care of my dad who may have physical or mental disabilities-- or, that I'd be leaving behind a widowed mom.

Worst case personal scenarios or options:
    • For some reason I can't/won't take the CO move and will end up homeless (living in parents basement) and jobless
    • Delay start date in CO (if I can), jobless and homeless a few weeks
    • End up with leases in CO and MN and no job

    ahhhh eek!

I've decided to wait through the weekend to take any action on the above. I have a "90% sure" subleaser I'm visiting with monday.

I'd wait through the weekend and if you father fate is still uncertain, then ask the job in CO if they will extend your start date. If they are a decent company, they should give you some leeway if you explain the situation.

    +1 KingTermite

They should be understanding of your situation. You just have to take it day by day and see how his condition improves. You have another week and a half before the movers have to pick up your things.

    How's he doing?

if things remain uncertain with your pop...i'd keep everything on hold...

ask the new job in CO if you can extend the start date...ask your potential subletter to hold their horses...

I'll agree with KT and the others. Wait and see how the weekend goes. Maybe spend some time with friends just trying to relax. Then if things are uncertain ask your new job if you can start later. They were very keen to get you there, I am sure that they will be understanding of your situation and be a bit flexible.

If they aren't, they probably won't be good to work for.

Take care of yourself. Take a multivitamin or two and try something to take your mind temporary of your current problems. Please don't let yourself get sick from the stress and worry. Wishing you and your family good luck and a speedy recovery.

Good advice here. I think any medical situation emergency takes a little while to figure out the exact prognosis. Stay put till then and figure out your options.

I agree with KT. A lot understandably seems overwhelming right now, so give it a little time to settle since you've still got some time.

About your poor Dad, Mom, Colorado and Minnesota: Holy crap, heck if I know! You've got a lot of stress, Artifice!

And at least we all know the cure for stress!

    1. Have as much rip-roaring loud sex as possible before you sublet your apt.
    2. Have as many nostalgic sneaky "are they listening" high-schooly make out sessions as possible once you move into Mom and Pop's basement.

No need to thank me for pointing out the obvious.

You have a lot on your plate. I am considering a job that will require a move (starting like the 20th, if they offer the job, as they're looking to hire ASAP) but the job is 4 hours away from here and only 3 hours from my parents.

Depending on the company, they may be able to work things out. A good friend of mine lost his younger brother right before he started a job that was 3 hours away from his current location and asked to work part time for the first month. He wanted time to console his parents (his brother was only 18) and just work through things himself. Company agreed, and it all worked out for him.

Also, at my current job, a coworker told me he had to take off two weeks after his first week there because of a family emergency. Stuff happens, and good employers understand.

I would contact the company and just give them a heads-up on what is going on. You'd be surprised at how understanding people can be especially if they like you. As far as a place to live you could always try htttp://www.couchsurfing.com
