Probably the wrong forum ... Knight Rider

Remembering from the 80's that Knight Rider was a worthwhile watch on TV, I decided to watch the premier of the "New" Knight Rider last night.

What a dissappointment!

Poor acting, boring plot and just an all around hokey program. Won't be tuning in again.

Yeah I saw that on the guide as I was flipping through the channels and I somehow knew it would be awful, so I didn't bother.

+1
Even the trailers looked painful.

I watched, even though I thought the original was hokey. Actually, I think last night was episode #2.

Caution Spoiler alert ****

In episode #1, the part that just made me laugh was when they were escaping from the dinner and Kitt turned into a pickup because he couldn't stop to let them get in, so they jumped into the back, then he morphed back into a car, with them in the seats...

I suspend reality somewhat when I watch tv, but to go from sprawled in the back of a pickup to sitting in the seat of a sports car without any grunting and groaning is bizarre... then if that is possible, how come Kitt couldn't seal the doors well enough to allow them to have some air during the following fire sequence...

I predict an early demise for the show.

Why the hell did they use a Ford? At least keep it in the family and use a GM like the old days.

At the very least it should have been a Ford GT...

Because the Firebird and Camaro are no longer manufactured. And, I though using the Cobra was great. Until, of course, I saw the program.

Could've used a Vette. Or the new Camaro? I like the old KITT voice better. But that music, the KITT music....that never gets old.

Aside from the car being all wrong (which was one of my majour gripes with The Transformers film, also) the new Knight Rider is seriously Hoff deficient. I grew up watching the show the first time around, and it's just not right without The Hoff. It's like a remake of The A-Team, without Mr. T.

You are apparently remembering the original from the mind of a 7 year old kid. It was a heinous show.

I loved it, too.

I've been watching the original in all it's badness on RTN. My wife hates it, I have to watch it in the living room by myself It's sooooo bad it's cool. The new one is just bad, but I'll keep watching it anyway. I'm sure it will be cancelled soon enough. BTW, the first eipsode was on last week and the backdoor pilot/movie was on a while ago. The movie was better than the show IMO.

The stupidest exchange from the new one was:

Michael: "Keep you eyes peeled"
KITT: "I don't have eyes"

The old one got it right:

Michael: "Keep you scanners peeled"

I was discussing this with my son the other day, who is a lot more of a car guy than I. The next day I was discussing that discussion with a personal friend, our mechanic at work and my personal mechanic.

It is absolute sacrilege that they would use a Ford instead of a GM.

My friend is a GM guy. If you bring up that he hates Ford, he will say, "I never said I hate Ford, I just drive GM. I have made a lot of money on Fords."

i think it's not crap enough. and some of the places that it is crap are needlessly so.

the reason the original is still loved is because it's camp. it may not have been intended as such, but it is.

they should have gone for camp, like the Adam Ward/Burt West Batman series. instead of this "we want to be serious and funny" thing they've got going on.

look, it's never going to be Hill Street Blues. or even Dragnet. the "star" of the show is a talking car.

give us car chases, cute girls and hunky guys. give us wildly improbable stunts.

don't give us stupid special effects and forced interaction between the characters.

i'm waiting to see how it goes.

and wondering how bad Val Kilmer needs the money.

...not to mention that there was some effort put into the reasonable believability and quality of the original. Sure, it was pure fantasy, but it was done in such a way that you could actually sit back and believe it for 30 minutes - with exception to some plot holes and technical problems (Case in point - S4 E1, "Knight of the Juggernaut:" The supposed CTA 2400-series elevated railway cars - a pair of props - were completely sans trucks, an underbody, or chassis. They rolled around on the ground as if they had hidden wheels. Rails were also recessed. Killed the scenes, for me).

The interior on-set shots of the new series take the cake for cheeziness though - it makes some of the cheap, bluescreend in-car shots back from the '60s and '70s seem palatable. Made specifically for the ricer set...

For that matter, the new KITT character sounds as if they took the personality straight out of the Knight Rider 2000 KIFT. To paraphrase Mulhare's line from that movie "...it lacks KITT's humanity."

Correction - in episode #26 (S2, E4), "Merchants of Death" of the original series, Hasselhoff is given the following line to KITT: "Keep your eyes open." KITT does not quip back.

Why build a better car when you can spend your money on a glam show of smoke and mirrors to deceive the public into thinking your cars rawk?

Seems that spending millions of dollars to perpetuate lies and deceit is a growing trend.

Correction: Glam show of cheap CGI.

As for the Mustang: The guy who provides the best deal gets the contract...and Pontiac ain't making no Firebirds...
