I just blue screened.

Yup. I got the blue screen of DEATH!!! But I expected it. I had overclocked my e8400 up to 3.6 ghz with only an itty bitty voltage bump. But it's cool now. I gave it another slight voltage bump, so I think I've overvolted my processor my .3 volts? Something like that. And my temp it still good. It's at 38c. Of course, it's in an Antec 900 case (with all the fans set to max) with an Artic Cooler Freezer Pro sitting on top of it. So I figure I could go over 4ghz with another .5 volt increase. but, meh. I dunno if I wanna go that high....

Overclocking's fun Typing this with my e4500 (2.2GHz stock) at 3.41GHz(homebrew machine) +.1125v over stock. Rock solid.

The other hard drive boots OS X on this...so what does that make it?

Dang. That's pretty good. I think my mobo undervoltaged my processor, so I have had to push it up to get it stable at 3.6. I think I'll try going for over 4 tomorrow.

Point to Taerom and Hickeydog.

I tease because I am ignorant and jealous. I would like to try overclocking but am afraid I would kill my machine. Maybe when I buy a new computer, I will keep the old one to play with.

same idea with my bikes. one to ride, one to play with
and if both happen to end up being just perfect, then it's time to get a new one.

I have an old steel roadie, a new AL roadie and my full hard AL mtb. Wife is not gonna tolerate too many more bikes, but I see a 24" or 26" bmx style cruiser coming soon. I mean, I gotta be able to take the kids out to play in the dirt, right?

You're all in violation of CFR 47 (FCC) Part 15. There is no way your crappy metal PC boxes can contain the RF at those high frequencies. (I am a regulatory compliance engineer who deals with the feds).

I had numerous problems with PCs over the years and crappy MS operating systems. I've had none such with Macs for the last 6 years. Once you try Mac you never go back.

What metal box?

(shot during build/setup)

I actually switched back from Mac to a PC...so yeah, you can go back. The only reason is that I game a decent amount, and the only Mac that met my needs for gaming/photography/other was a Mac Pro, and that was a little bit more than my homebrew (a little bit being around $1500). I had two systems, a G4 Powermac and a PC. Got sick of having 2 machines.

Pffft... I tried Mac. I went back to my PC.

No more overclocking for me though... I posted a bunch of stuff about my computer last year after building it (holy crap my "new" computer is now a year old).

It's plenty fast enough without overclocking it to play the computer games i want.

Don't buy. Build. Build your next computer. Don't buy it. You can't overclock (usually) a brand name computer. Build it. You get a much better deal, you get exactly what you want, and you can overclock it like mad.

+1

Most big box computer builders use the most generic/cheapest motherboards they can find.

You'll need an enthusiast motherboard to really have fun.

the EVGA 750i and 780i are both great mobos. I have the 750 and the only complaint I have with it is there is only 1 USB header on the board. But the 780i have 3 of them.

For AMD, nvidia is the best combo.
but for Intel CPU, Intel makes the best chipset. nvidia takes a close second, unless you need SLI

speaking of which... I need to clean out my water loop in the AMD/nvidia/nvidia system...

I remember when we used to replace the 4.77 Mhz CPUs and think we were really squeezing the horsepower out of our systems.

Or the first time someone I knew bought a system with a 10 megabyte hard drive... That was a monster system.

My online time used to be spent communicating on a dial-up BBS that was run on a series of floppy drives. and a pair of 1200 bps modems. And it was one of the more powerful BBS systems in the bay area.

I am just fine with my 3.3 gigahertz dual core processor and 1.5 gig of memory and 100 gb of hard drive in my 3 year old laptop. I even forget what is in my desktop system except it is an AMD64, that is significantly faster.

Oh yeah... the days of a NEC V20 to replace the 8088 8MHz proc. The only problem I had with my machine, I couldn't upgrade to 640kb, it had 512kb and no additional banks

The interesting thing about personal computing these days is that the clock cycle race is slowing down... On the other hand, the race for cores/cpu is really starting to heat up (along with energy effeciency).
