Going to New Paltz NY tomorrow to ride

I'm headed up to the old stomping grounds tomorrow for a leisurely ride through the mountains. Gonna freeze my butt off, but it's now or never for this year.

Rolling out of philly at 5 or 6am... probably be there by 8 or 9.

I'll post some pr0n when I get home. The leaves should be good, at least I hope. I flew up last year hoping to get some good leaf pictures from the air and everything was still green and it was 80 degrees. Hah..

Ooooo bike ride pr0n!

The temperature at the start was a brisk 38 degrees F, colder in the mountains. I am pretty sure I saw below-freezing temperatures in the crannies of Mohonk Mountain.

The obligatory shot of Skytop from Butterville Rd. in New Paltz. This photo has been taken thousands of times by thousands of different photographers.

From some road on which I was lost, trying to find my way to Ashokan.

The Ashokan Reservoir. This is where NYC Tap Water comes from. From here, it travels down a large aqueduct to a huge contamination plant, where all kinds of bacteria, parasites, cockroach food, and that funky NYC water smell are added. Two towns were destroyed in order to create NYC's water supply.

There's a nice pedestrian/bikeway across the reservoir. They ask that you please not pee in NYC's water supply.

I don't know what body of water this is, but it looked cool.

This plaza is actually in "Ashokan" which borders "Shokan." The brown sign right above the pickup truck says "Shokan" and the one on the other side of the road says "Ashokan." Odd.

It was too damn cold to stop for any more photos. But, I am going back up there again on the 12th. Hopefully it'll be warmer.

New Paltz has some nice eateries as I remember. I took classes up there several years back. Great scenery. Mohonk is a neat place to visit even if pricey and the view from the fire tower is spectacular. Minnewaska State Park is also pretty neat.

Great photos by the way!

Yeah it's expensive. I lived in NP from 83 until 92... it was cheap when I was a kid..

Ask, and you shall receive:

View from just down the hill from the fire tower (10/21/07)

View of the hotel from the top of the fire tower (10/21/07)

A view OF the fire tower, with some dude (me) in front of it (10/21/07)

A view of the whole thing from about 4000 above it. I took it on full optical zoom through the small flap opening in the window, all while holding the plane in as much of a slip as I could with only one knee on the yoke.. heh (05/14/07)

Another neat view up the side of the fire tower. (10/21/07)
