    Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L is DA BAMB.

I'm going to post some sample photos from my shoots today. This lens is amazing. I can see why it costs near $2,000. The only disad is that it doesn't do macro. However, it is amazingly sharp all across the zoom range, and the bokeh at f/2.8 is beautiful. I haven't hit the point of lens diffraction, but I had no problems shooting at f/11.

In other news, if you don't have the 50mm f/1.8 for your Canon camera, then get that lens right now. It is dirt cheap (relatively speaking), and is one of the sharpest primes Canon puts out right now. Pros use this lens for headshots.

Samples of 50mm at HUGE focal lengths:

Ooh great choice! I never could justify one of those with my meager abilities, but I do have the 50mm/1.8 and it was well worth the money. I'd like to start photographing again, but I've kind of exhausted all my subject matter around here.

I'm borrowing the lens from my school newspaper. I'm returning it Tuesday. I might get up early to catch a bike race and shoot some money photos.

I'm returning it on Tuesday, which is okay since I'm getting my 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 lens by that point.

You can get a 70-200 f/2.8 non IS, used, for about $900. It's a great lens, my workhorse for sure.

Can you handhold that? The IS helped me out immensely.

I'm slowly upgrading my arsenal, but VERY slowly. Each lens will be more expensive than the last

Plus, if I decide to go telephoto, I want to get something with a STUPID zoom range. I'll probably start with a cheaper 100-400mm (is it worth it?) or just drop the dollar and get anything that goes up to 600mm.

    I want to shoot grasshoppers.

They say 1/focal length to be safe, i can get sharp shots at 200mm at probably as low as 1/125. Just takes practice, like anything else.

I typically use it for sports so i prefer to be around 1/400 at least in which case the IS does nothing. I rarely use something that long indoors so it's not usually an issue.

Hmmmm, Photographers, for years, have held 200+ primes and 70-200/300 zooms with no problem whatsoever.

All you have to do is learn the proper form with which to hold your camera. Basically, making a tripod out of your arms and body.

In lens and in body shake reduction is a wonderful thing for low light or long F/L shooting, but proper form helps more than anything.

Others may, and probably will, have differing opinions.

I have a Nikon D40x so I can't use the Canon 50mm, but practically everyone on the nikonians forum raves about the Nikon 50 mm f/1.8, and it is definitely on my to buy list.

Nice shots, MrCrassic. I especially like the escalator photo.

Glad to be there...Please quote me next time you say something so ludicrous.

On a more related note...i've needed a medium range zoom for a very long time now. After agonizing over it for quite a while, i finally pushed "buy" for a 24-70 f/2.8. I want to keep it, but i can't justify it. I got $200 off so if anything i can turn it around for a profit...if i do convince myself to sell it...like i should...

Be careful touching nice glass, it's hard to let it go in the future.

Yes he did compare an IS to non-IS lens but...his comment of "comparing the two is stupid" was in reference to your comment about point and shoots. Comparing an SLR to a Point and Shoot is stupid. They are two completely different animals.

On topic; I have a coworker that has that lens and I hope to try it out once I get my camera. I still want to try out that Sigma lens I mentioned in your other post which I hear is pretty darn close to this lens but half the price.

Noone is comparing them except for you. lol. Listen to ehidle. He made a statement that he liked his point and shoot totally unrelated to any DSLR discussion. You are the one who mentioned comparisons.

This thread is going in the crapper real fast like most of the threads timmyquest replies in when he takes everything way to personally.

70-200 is very easy to handhold with out IS when shooting outdoors. The IS really comes in handy if you use a 1.4 converter and or shooting indoors at a slower shutter speed. Rule of thumb is when shutter speed is lower than the focal length ...use IS
