What do I need to know to fix an electric mower?

Mine won't hold a charge and none of the shops in town say they can work with it. the problem must be in the battery and/or the charger -- how hard could this be?

I opened it up to take a look at it and it appears they just have 2 12v batteries wired in series. However, there are more wires than I would expect. There is stuff for charging, safety, and controls and it is not totally clear to me what does what.

I tried wiring the batteries directly to the motor and while it spins it acts like it's only on half voltage. Also, I get a good spark, so I presume I'm doing something wrong (I take it the normal switch uses some sort of relay?)

Anyway, I don't really know what I'm doing. What do I need to know if all I want to be able to do is charge the batteries and run the mower? I couldn't care less if I have to modify it so that it doesn't work exactly the same way as it does now.

What kind of batteries does it have? NiCads develop a surface charge over time, so don't charge all the way and eventually have to be replaced.

How old are they? Lead acid batteries do wear out after awhile. It sounds like they go through the charging process but the battery doesn't hold the charge, which points to the batteries.

I'm an EE by the way, so I've worked with different types of batteries.

For what it's worth, I agree...unless it fried an armature winding or two, or the bearings wore out. Best to get a load test on the batteries.

What size are the batteries? Should be marked.

It might be as easy as swappin g batts in a motorcycle...... ala, no problem.

The only thing you have to concrn yourself with is the batteries themselves. One bad one would drag the other down. Best advice, swap 'em both, and initialize them before use.

Do you have an Intersate Batteries store nearby? They claim to have more replacement batteries than anyone, and can MAKE you a battery if needed.

The batteries are only a couple years old. I need to take the cover off again to see what kind they are, but it was obvious what kind I needed.

Presuming I get batteries with the same rating and wire them properly, I assume I can use the charger that came with my mower. Is there a way I can load test the batteries myself or can I have them tested wherever I buy new ones?

I would attempt to bypass the battery and hook it up with a system to run it straight from the cord, that is if it isn't too inconvenient to use it that way.

I don't understand the part about getting a good spark. Is this an eletric or gas mower?
