Earth to be hit by an Asteroid tonight....(Not Kidding)

ASTEROID 2008 TC3: A small, newly-discovered asteroid named 2008 TC3 is approaching Earth and chances are good that it will hit. Measuring only a few meters across, the space rock poses no threat to people or structures on the ground, but it should create a spectacular fireball, releasing about a kiloton of energy as it disintegrates and explodes in the high atmosphere. At least one expert estimates that atmospheric entry will occur on Oct 7th at 0246 UTC over northern Sudan. Stay tuned to http://spaceweather.com for more information and updates to this developing story.

Too bad we aren't likely to see it in the Western Hemisphere.

I was hoping for at least a 20m tsunami...
oh well, at least this goes to show how bad we are at spotting asteroids and meteors on a trajectory to earth.

Neat stuff. This evening we had a rainbow for about 1/2 hour, which is a long time. Really big and a complete semicircle, we could see the whole thing from our front porch - it probably covered something like 40 kilometers or so - and, it was a double.

Super cool.

Anyone ever read 'Lucifer's Hammer' by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle? It's a great story about a huge comet that hits earth.

Yeah, one of my favorite books. A bit preachy, but a great read. My favorite part is the US Army Unit that goes cannibal.

Another vote for Lucifers Hammer. I love the apocalyptic genre of books, they just have so much fun.

The NEO page says this happens every couple of months. They just never spot objects this size beforehand.

Obviously, our detection ability is getting pretty good, at least from the sunlit side.
