There's time now
I need a sloppy joe sauce recipe
I would appreciate any help. I plan on using vegetarian crumbles and beans. I do not have brown sugar in the house. I have found loads of recipes but each requires brown sugar (would sugar in the raw work here?). I have no idea how each would taste so I am looking for opinions/personal recipes/etc. thanks a lot
Not safe for work
sloppy joe sauce:
1 tablespoon olive oil (or whatever veggie oil on hand)
1 medium onion diced small
1 green pepper diced small
2 cloves garlic minced
3 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 8 oz can of tomato sauce
1/4 cup tomato paste
3 tablespoons maple syrup (but if you don't have it regular sugar is fine. Start with less, then adjust to taste)
1 tablespoon yellow mustard (the wet stuff, not the powder)
Saute onion and pepper until softened. Add garlic and saute for another minute. Add your beans and crumbles. Then chili powder, oregano and salt and stir. Add tomato sauce and the tomato paste. Cook over medium low heat for 10 minutes. Add the maple syrup and mustard. If you are using regular sugar then add it with the tomato sauce and paste. Turn off heat and let sit for 10 minutes to let flavours blend and settle. Eat!
I found this recipe from the Post Punk Kitchen website. It's really tasty and even better the next day.

Just keep dumping stuff in until it tastes right................... Start with ketchup......
The Improbable Bulk
I would think sugar in the raw would work in a recipe, just start with a little bit less.
Do you have molasses? If so, I would try substituting a combination of sugar in the raw and molasses (which is pretty much what I think brown sugar is).
