Favourite Autograph

What's the best, hardest to obtain, or weirdest autograph you ever obtained?

The weirdest one I've ever gotten was on a flight from Regina to Toronto. A few seats ahead of me was Ben Johnson (track star - held the world's fastest man title for a short while until he was found to be doping). I didn't have anything for him to write on, so I dug through the seat pouch in front of me and came up with a "Do Not Disturb" sign for the washroom. Back then they used these signs rather than the handle slider sign they use today. Anyhow, I asked the Flight Attendant to ask Ben for his autograph. I don't think it register with him that he was signing on a bathroom related item ... which is kind of fitting seeing as though his career went down the toilet.

The best autograph(s) I got was when one of my father's employees, who was a friend of Glen (Chico) Resch, went to visit him in the early 80's while he played for the New Jersey Devils. I was an avid hockey card collector back then and sent my entire collection of Devil's cards with him. He ended up getting the entire team to sign their cards, including all the duplicates I sent. I ended up selling the collection, including Gretzky rookie cards, for a lot of money to use for the down payment for our first house.

Personalized autographed baseball from Nolan Ryan. Worth nothing to anyone else, but the coolest thing I own by far.

Looking at ebay, it's probably worth about $50. Those type of items are always worth more to the individual owner.

I have like 4 or 5 signatures on a program from a spring training baseball game.

It was the year they had the second spring training... I think a couple of the sigs are OK... If I remember right, Travis Fryman and Greg Gagne were two of them. I wonder where that program is...

I also have a signed World Series ball from the 2004 MVP (Manny Ramirez) that was given to me as a gift. If the letters MVP weren't under the signature, I wouldn't know who signed it by looking at it. As a special note, 2004 was the first, and only year so far, I have ever seen the Red Sox play at Fenway. So, I take full credit for breaking the jinx.

Pretty unexciting, but cool that it's a handwritten note from her. It's hard to imagine something like that happening today.

That stuff I like. I work in archives, but regardless, there's context there. I have heard of people who collect correspondence or documents with famous autographs; that I can see lots of value in.

Of course, it's not as personalized or sentimental as, say getting a ball signed by your favorite player, etc. But more interesting imho.

Okay, embarassing one.

I've got the autograph of Harry Wayne Casey, better known as "K.C." of K.C. and the Sunshine Band.

I'm going to go and hang my head in shame now.

I no longer get autographs from people, but when I was a kid I got:

Hans Kestler - Brewmaster for Augsberger Beer back in 1985.
Cindy Bremser (finished 4th in the 3000 meters at the 1984 Summer Olympics, the one where Zola Budd & Mary Decker collided).
George Sheehan

Eddy Merckx. On the bill of a Colonago cycling cap. I got it at a cycling tradeshow (I dont think it was called Interbike back then) in New York City in 1979, two years after his retirement. I was 16 years old at the time. The guy was a friggen tree! I still have the hat.
