Lets talk about Durham, NC

So I am currently in Boston and to be honest, think that the only other places I could live in the US are CO, CA, WA and off late NYC. That being said there is a pretty neat opportunity in Durham, NC. Now this would be a great career move but given that I am not American, not religious and pretty left leaning I am not too sure about the life side of the things. Any insights?

Skiing, proximity to a cool urban environment and the type of work that I do. That rules out UT, MT, NM and AK(would love to though). Austin is a possibility if I get paid a lot of money.

not that I'm biased or anything. but.. with the exception of having to take a short plane ride or 5 hour dive.. i think it meets all criteria.

Well we only have 3 of the major wireless companies here in San Diego. You'd have to drive an hour or so to go skiing, but only 5 minutes to go surfing. And did I mention the fall/winter cycling weather is terrible here? It was 85 degrees today!

Durham is OK (I used to live in Greensboro, which is nearby).
There are a ton of colleges in the area, so it's not the hard core red neck that you are worried about (that would be Fayetteville).

It's flat so biking is easy.

NC is a beautiful state.

They have the best stoplights in the country. They are all computerized and have sensors so if there is no cross traffic, you always get the green light.

My only opinion is based on the imperfect method of who replies when I say, "Hello" when I run past them. NY got a perfect 0 one time. Raleigh-Durham usually rates in the 80-90% range. So, my preference would lean toward Durham.

After living in Boston, that sounds like a pipe dream.

Live in Raleigh, work in Durham. Durham actually had the second-highest crime rate nationally per person a few years back. I can't tell when we drive through though. Pretty okay looking.

Raleigh is close to Durham and is nicer though. Our downtown is getting very cool, big overhauls on everything. Traffic lights are crap though. A few streets are run by computers and they work well, but everything else is has a literal 100% chance of you hitting every red light.

Oh, and if you like MTBing we have a great MTB organization that does a lot of trail work and group rides. We've got nice trails too. Good road biking once you get out of the city.

Hah! My only claim to fame is that Michellie Jones was my neighbor for 2 years. Then she won the silver in the Olympics and moved to a big house right near the beach. She still works out at the same YMCA I go to.

No, that was before I started cycling. I remember once during one of our rare rainy days she was on her trainer in her garage. I left to run errands and when I came back 3 hours later she was still there on the bike.
