Messing with an Ebay Scammer - Tips ?

So I came across one of those Ebay bike scams where the guy wants you to contact him outside Ebay and send him money by Western Union. I've played along for a bit just to waste his time and get his hopes up. I just got his "invoice".

Got any tips of how I can waste more of his time & jerk him around a bit more ??

By the way, did anyone hear the "This American Life" episode about scamming the scammer ?? They REALLY messed with that guy !!

I'm amazed that anyone would still fall for this, even the most gullible, yet I still get the occasional email in my spam folder.

I wouldn't waste your time with this guy, but if you have nothing better to do, try telling him you sent him the wire transfer, but the lady at the bank made you wait while they had a police officer come and watch the transfer after typing something into the computer. I dunno, just something to make the person think it's being tracked. *Disclaimer: Do NOT actually send the money. Just say you did.

I wonder if you could get the scammer to mail you a dollar as "proof" that he's legitimate. Then you scammed him out of a dollar.

I know, stupid ideas. I'm too honest.

I dunno... sounds legit to me.

Just today, a very generous man from Nigeria promised to send me $320,000 US if I would send him all my bank information and help him out.

Naturally, I did not even hesitate because I love to help people who ask nicely.

I should be extremely rich by day break so I'm already shopping for new bikes.

He wants me to send payment tomorrow. I said "Sure. I will go to the bank tomorrow to get the funds"
As it turns out, I might get very sick tomorrow and be in the hospital for a few days with no access to email. Then maybe I'll tell him I can find the same bike for $150 less, have a few giggles and be done.

I'm just wasting a few minutes replying to email. Less time than I spend reading some of the silly threads here on BF.

By the way, if anyone else comes across those scam Ebay listings, scroll all the way to the bottom to "Report Listing" and choose "fraudulent listing" so that Ebay can yank it off.

So your time is worth $10 or $30 or $100 an hour, you're fooling with some guy whose time is worth 50 cents an hour, and thinking YOU are wasting HIS time.

Old joke: Guy sees a farmer holding a pig up to eat apples off the tree. He asks, "Doesn't that take a lot of time?" The farmer says, "What's time to a pig?"

There is another reason to avoid scammers: These days, violent gangs are using scams and Internet crimes for a way to get more revenue to buy their boyz more Desert Eagle .50 cals.

Its unlikely that something would happen, but its something worth mentioning.

That's a good one

He gave me an address in England. Maybe I'll spend a buck and send $1100 in Monopoly money to him. I wish I had a quality fake chack I could send him.

Got to 419eater.com, get a mentor, they will show you the way. Or pawn the scammer off to someone more experienced in scam baiting. Do not e-mail a scammer from your regular e-mail account.

A few years ago I messed with this one guy who was selling a 3 year old BMW Z3 for $8000.

Coles notes version:

He asked me to send him half the money via Western Union. I agreed.

I photoshopped some Western Union money transfer reciepts, sent him photos of 'me', pretended I died and had my 'sister' follow up with the transaction. My 'sister' fell in love with him and had him promise that he would come and visit her when the transaction went through.

There were close to 700 emails that went back and forth over a period of 3 weeks

I did this once, it was the I'll send you Money orders, you send me cash and keep 20%.

He sent me the money orders, poor quality color copies. I kept pushing off getting to the bank, and then told him the money orders were cashed without a problem. The money orders were delivered via FedEx to my office.I kept delaying sending him his share until he got the point.

Probably would not have wasted my time except I work in document verification (currency specifically) and wanted to see what type of fake money orders I'd get.

I wonder what would have happened if actually tried to cash those money orders..
