Bioware... /mourn /rant

For a company that was known for some of the best games in the fantasy RPG, I just find that it sucks that they are putting out one of their best works soon (Dragon Age)... but because they are part of EA now, upon release it likely will have activation, CD locking, and other garbage that causes people to just not bother purchasing anything from that company, period. I don't care to pirate it just because it adds more ammo to EA to add more Draconian DRM mechanisms.

I think if some startup company came around that could make decent RPGs along the lines of Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Morrowind, and NeverWinter Nights, they would make a mint... this is assuming they do like Stardock Software and actually treat their customers as customers, not potential criminals.

If you want to see cool games done right, look at Origin Systems (another EA casuality) and their "interactive movies". Yes, graphics are primitive now, but it seems like all but a few games out these days can render the hairs on some zombie's arm in excellent detail, but have absolutely little or no plot.

/rant off.

Yeap... Not a big fan of EA stuff anymore because of the DRM. I passed on Mass Effect for the PC because of the DRM crapstorm.

I do have both major Stardock games (Galactic Civilizations II and Sins of a Solar Empire).

Also, it seems that Bethseda Software is doing the "right" thing by not using the draconian DRM methods with Fallout 3. That's not to say they're not using DRM (same with Stardock), they're just using a system that is relatively simple and does not need to "phone home" for activation.

I have no problem with a CD key that needs to be entered during installation or even needing to keep the CD in the drive while playing (no different when playing console games). But the latest forms of DRM that have been showing up are just kinda ruining things for me.

I will admit that i broke down and bought Bioshock because it's actually good and i picked up Far Cry 2 and it's been good so far. But for some of the other big titles that i'm really wanting to play (i.e. Mass Effect, Spore, and Crysis), i'm going to pass.

Actually, i'm not sure about the first Crysis and DRM, but i believe Crysis: Warhead has SecuROM.

I passed on Crysis because even my powerhouse computer still couldn't run it decently...
