Well, not really castaway...kidnapped actually.
Oscar Lizcano was a Colombian congressman kidnapped 8 years ago by FARC rebels (similar to Ingrid Betancourt, who was recently rescued in a mission so brazen it doesn't even work in the movies). This week, one of his captors deserted and helped him escape after being held hostage for the better part of a decade.
So what do you do when you're a captive of marginalized revolutionary guerillas hiding in the jungle?
Remarkable stories...both his an Betancourt's.He said his captors didn't even let him talk to rank-and-file rebels.
"I was so lonely," he told the AP.
So Lizcano, an economist by training, created imaginary students to lecture.
"I had the idea to stick sticks in the ground," he said. "I gave them names and they were my students and I gave lectures that I prepared, in history (themes such as) the First World War, anecdotes from (Simon) Bolivar and philosophy."
Otherwise, Lizcano said, he passed the time reading, listening to the radio and occasionally playing chess with his captors.
