You poor, pitiful, non-technical types...

So I'm at the local electronics chain store tonight to return something. As usual, the returns department is understaffed and the line is unnecessarily long. I am observing this poor woman in front of me, helplessly placing her i-Mac, which she probably got suckered into by a mediocre salesperson 6 months ago, on the counter. Complaining about it being slow or something. Probably nothing more than a virus or spyware or whatever it is that Mac users complain about since it's not worth a hacker's while to concoct viruses for them. And she complacently accepts (shall I say bends over like a trooper?) the associate's judgment that she pay 70 bucks and leave it there for days while some minimally competent $9/hr employee runs some software thru it.

The associate calls another associate, who looks like a nice guy -- but I watch in horror as he clumsily DROPS her iMac on the floor. Again, the technologically inept woman takes it like a man, and hardly flinches. I can't help but smurk and say, "lady, that takes care of your problem -- you get a new computer and don't have to worry about troubleshooting that one." But the associate claims it dropped on his foot and I guess that means the computer is OK and the lady probably is so uncomfortable anyway publicly confessing her ignorance of the operation of her gadget, that she shrugs it off. Of course, the guy behind me in line and I both agree neither of us would have left there without demanding a new computer....

<sigh.>

Poor lady. I feel sorry for her. I would have made them connect it on the spot and called a manager pronto.

OMG that is terrible; this is why it's really worth it to buy Apple stuff from Apple. If the manufacturer offers you a channel for purchase or direct support, it almost is always better care (not necesarily pricing).

That's the problem right there. You want a computer, you don't go to BestBuy/Circuit City. You go two houses down to your neighborhood geek and have him built one for ya.

But even so, if I had been there, those "sales reps" would have got on earful. :guns1::computerpunch:

There are two places to buy Apple stuff in town, one is the Apple Store, the other is a local company which is an Apple authorized reseller and repair shop. I like the local company, mostly because they're local.

I'll never buy anything more than games, dvds, or cds (or other small items) from Best Buy. Their return policy is atrocious, their employees and "techs" are a-holes, and they always need the original receipt.

I did like Circuit City because they always kept all my purchases in their computer, so I never needed a receipt, and they'll gladly honor manufacturer's warranties, but the one here is going out of business.

I guess I have to order anything over $100 online now.

I have to give props to Circuit City. I recently returned a laptop after about a week just because I didn't like it. I was fully prepared to pay the 15% restockng fee, but they took the return no questions asked and waived the fee when I got a different computer there.

Best Buy is decent if you are buying a generic PC laptop. I have price shopped and found that in general, the best bang for your buck is there or snagging a coupon deal at Costco. However, always pull the model's stats from the maker's website. One model may have an adequate maximum RAM limit. Another very similar model may have the ability to max out at 1GB RAM tops.

I wouldn't buy a Mac from Best Buy. I'd hit an Apple store or a dedicated Macintosh reseller. BB pretty much has a little section for Macs and you might get one person manning that station, but usually there isn't a soul there.

Glad you feel better about yourself, then.

Seriously, I would've made a scene. Better yet, I would have had the slog behind the counter crying for his mommy without even raising my voice. They get more scared, and more likely to do anything you ask, when they feel that it's a private matter.

But if that didn't work -- and it usually does -- then the people in the parking lot would have been able to hear.

Incidentally, this was MicroCenter...which is a hair more "mom and pop" as far as chain stores go, and maybe 1/2 point better image in the eyes of consumers here. But still a chain store.

I can't believe she didn't say a word about him dropping it. Didn't get upset, didn't bat an eye. Again, she probably felt so self-conscious at bringing her computer in and not knowing a thing about it, that she didn't want to say anything to this guy who had the potential to help her. I just feel sorry for people who have no clue about these machines they allow themsleves to become dependent on.

Seriously, that's when you step in and make sure she doesn't get screwed. So what is it's a stranger, so what if you look down your nose at her technical ineptitude. Man up next time and do the right thing for your fellow human being.

+1 especially when you KNOW they can't stand up for themselves.
