At least it's not a violent, DUI trend because of drinking. I'd rather die young and sauced.

uhm.. they reside in a country that once was the wealthiest in the world, encompassing nearly half the world's land mass – and that now has been restricted to part of an island with a temperate soggy climate that remains more or less constant year-round.

Maybe they are 'wise' to rethink flooding the public with enough booze to drown the masses.

Given the astonishing carnage inflicted by alcohol abuse in the US and Europe, the percentage of the population that seems to think it's a huge friggin joke is somewhat mind boggling.

Oh well.

That, of course, was my point directed at the stupid idiots who talk about this sort of thing as "nanny state" -- even if you don't care about the drunk, the rest of us have a reasonable interest in preventing the drunk from causing damage to us, and that is a legitimate realm for government action.

We haven't had "happy hour" in Illinois for years. The only way around the law for bar owners is to offer a special that lasts from open to close. It was annoying at first but now it's just the norm, one odd result...students used to go out to drink early to hit the specials, now they don't go out until 10pm so the bars are pretty empty at 5pm.

Since when is that a factor in anything? Obesity, smoking, ordinary air pollution, and guns do plenty of damage.

Even though I make fun of it sometimes alcohol abuse is no joke. Its something I struggle with from time to time. I come from a long line of drinkers, all usually good natured and highly functional drinkers but still... Maybe our Scotch/Irish heritage make us both predisposed to it and gives us the constitution to handle it. Who knows.

One thing I will give Pcad credit for is being able to quit his pain meds cold turkey (in spite of legit back pain). That takes some serious stones.

Drunk driving laws are already on the books. What I am not clear about is why driving drunk is considered so much worse than other types of idiocy behind the wheel that get people killed or maimed.

People intentionally drive tired, texting, too fast for conditions, just not paying attention, etc. All of those things are stupid and irresponsible, but society goes easy on these people. If you take meds for some condition that affects your ability to drive, that's tolerated. Since it is fashionable to consider alcoholism to be a disease, elevated penalties seem more related to our inability to get past the idea that drinking is a sin than anything else.
