I've decided to give up my cell phone. It's just not worth it.

I'd rather not have a phone at all.

I've done that too, and yeah it is blissful, but my friends and family started to make good on their violent threats if I didn't get a phone.

And all I want in a phone is a really good phone with a phonebook. Hard to find these days, they're all piled on with a lot of extra crap.

All the features of the Rant are things that my 8525 has been able to do for 3 years.

am I the only one who sees a world where they can sell a product called the "Rant" as sort of ... wrong?

Haven't had a phone (land or cell) in months. I tell my mom that if she needs to contact me, send me an e-mail. Don't have a computer? Sorry.

My Blackberry is perfect. I don't get that many calls, but I get tons of emails. Hence, super efficient.

So what happens if you have an emergency situation?

Such as what?

On college campus -- hospital clinic on-site, a real hospital a few blocks away, computers in every building, security guards everywhere.

If I'm on a ride, well, no one can come pick me up anyhow, and making them worry won't help either of us. I have gotten lost about 60 miles away from home before and safely found my way back by asking clerks in a shop.

Aside from there, I'm usually home or in a place where a situation is pretty unlikely.

To each his own. I know that in my previous experiences, there were situations where my phone got me out of really bad situations, like not being homeless for a night or having to walk 15 miles.

Indeed, agreed. However outside from the cops/EMS/fire I don't really have anyone to rely on, anyway, making a phone useless.

Im not a techie but will be separated from my Wife for a few months while I
find work/apt/etc in another state and then she'll join me when her contract is up.
I need a mulletphone.....all business up front like a Blackberry, but party in the
back like an Instinct or G1. The choices are baffling !!
Right now it looks like a Sprint plan with a behold fone......any suggestions ?

I'm a huge fan of my HTC 8525 through Cingular. I don't think they have it anymore, but it was replaced by the Tilt, which does all the same stuff but the screen can tilt 45 degrees when the keyboard is slid open.

It's business up front:
- WinMobile OS
- MS Office Mobile (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- pdf viewer
- WiFi
- Live Search
- OggSync (synchronize your Outlook and Google calendars)

And party in the back (via plenty of 3rd party freeware):
- Media Player
- Skype
- All manners of IM clients
- Ton o' games
- BT GPS with Pocket Streets turns it into a keen navigation system
