Corrupt File Repair tool?

Maybe one of you IT guys have more experience in this sort of thing and can help out.

I have multiple AVI files broken up in various directories. There is one episode of all the files in the torrent that won't copy over to my data drive. I get a CRC error every time.

I've tried multiple things like copying to a 2nd file, running chkdsk, using xcopy with option for ignore error, going through other tools to copy, but nothing has worked. I can open and run the avi file just fine. But it won't let me copy it.

Does anybody know any tools that may fix the corrupt file? I've googled and all I see are tools to fix CRC errors on zip and rar files, but not other files in general.

Any suggestions?

Is the file corrupted because of disk-directory problems? Or are there bad-sectors in the portions that the file occupies? Or was the copy process interrupted when this file was originally copied to this drive? Each one of those possible causes would require a different process to resolve.

One thing I've found that worked kinda OK is to use VirtualDub and do a direct-copy of the video and audio streams to a new file. Set the error-options to skip bad frames and continue on both audio & video. It'll copy the file frame-by-frame and when it gets to a bad part, it'll skip over and continue with the next good frame. The resultant copy will play ok, and just have a little skip at the bad part. Or you can set the error-option somewhere in between with "Decode anyway" and end up with garbage video and audio for a while, but all the frames will be present and run-time and number of frames will be the same as original.

I'm honestly not sure when the corruption occured. It was a bit torrent download, so it could have been corrupted before I downloaded it, it could have gotten hosed on my disk drive. It could not have been in the copy from my hard drive to my external hard drive because it shows corrupted before I even copy (like if I try to make a copy in the same directory).

I'll try Virtualdub and see how it works....sounds like it should fix me up, I hope. Thanks.

Oh, that's not what I thought. From the subject, I thought your File Repair Tool was corrupt and taking bribes or something.

Good luck with the issue.

Nope....VirtualDub didn't work.

It got going and about 5 seconds in to the video it came up with a CRC error trying to read source video.

Did the file work at one time? CRC errors usually points to bad data coming off the drive, meaning bad sectors. Try a "chkdsk /f" on that drive and reboot.

Yeah I know CRC errors are typically disk errors. I ran "chkdsk /f" before starting this thread, no problems.

I wish I could just find this one vid online to redownload, but it was one small part of a HUGE download (so big it took a week or two with many seeds).
