On the Idiosyncracies of Cats

Cats are bizarre creatures.

some of my cat's rituals and oddities:

-when we first got Marco, he was perhaps a month old (feral kitten, found in the middle of a busy street). For a solid six months he would go in the bathroom and do the nursing thing on the rug (hold it in his teeth, push/pull with his front paws.)

-when he was about 2 or 3 someone gave my wife a fleece and flannel blanket as a gift; we kept it on the couch for chilly nights. At various times we'd catch him, umm....violating it. Yes, I mean that violation.

-he has different meows for different situations. My favorite is the one that greets me every evening when I get home from work. It's pathetically high and mournful, I assume to convey "I haven't eaten in 9 hours, and boy, all this sleeping and licking all day takes a lot out of a guy!" The meow then becomes all weird and drooly as I put the food in their bowls.

-He loves playing under the covers as we make the bed, as I suspect most cats do.

-He loves hellish heat. The radiator in our living room has a big enclosure which acts as a window sill. When full up the heat turns this surface into a griddle suitable for preparing eggs and burgers. Naturally, he lays on this for hours at a time when it is fired up.

-Heat from other sources is also relished by His Majesty. While holding him in his preferred position (flopped over my left shoulder), he loves when I put my lips on his neck/shoulders and blow (builds up heat)....instant increase in purring and activation of the push/pull thing...ow; watch teh shoulder, kitteh!

-when in same position as above, fascinating purring variations may be achieved by gently squeezing during feline exhalations.

et tous?

My wife found this funny video about a "catwoman".
Apparently it is spot-on cat behavior impersonation

(I'm alergic, so I'm not around them enough to know)

My husband's cat, Sammi, is a 'niche' cat. She insists on sleeping in the triangle formed by his elbow when he goes to sleep.

Anniebear, on the other hand, is a 'ridge' cat. She sleeps on top of my hip!

Alice likes to drape herself on my right forearm when I'm at the computer. Makes typing a bit harder .

Alice is my best friend until it comes time for kibble. Then she has eyes only for Mr. East Hill.... .

My cat has the ability of stepping on my "boys" with all four paws, one at a time. And he doubles his weight when he does it. When I'm sitting on the couch, and he wants to sit in my lap, I have to cover things with my hand. I guess he's getting me back for what I did to his.

Does he then stretch and extend his claws? Because that sucks royally.

I used to have a cat that would do forward summer saults for treats. He would tuck his head between his front legs and roll over, forward. It was the coolest thing in the world.

The cat we have now is OCD about his litter box. He will poo and burry for an hour sometimes. He also is OCD about licking all the fur off his belly and legs. We drugged him for it once, but then he we comatose, so now we just let him be him and he's off the drugs.

He also begs for attention, and then runs away when you give it to him.

Pretty sure these two behaviours are connected.

My big boy likes to fall over (literally) with a THWUMP when around me - signaling me to pet him/scratch the tummy. Then when he's done with me - jumps up and stares at me and then my fish. And so he meows at me till I open my fish lid so he can "lick a fishy" - and as he's drinking the fishy water - he has his two front paws doing double time scratching the desk in front of the tank. weird cat.

Other main cat, Splatter Cat (of course she answers to me - - "Tweeties"), likes to sit on my shoulder like a parrot. I can walk around the house with her sitting there.

btw, if you'd like to get your cat addicted and watch them jones big time, skip the cat nip and go str8 to the hard stuff:

I throw one across the room and a paw is there to catch it before it hits the ground.
No, I'm not exaggerating.

I've had to give up using my lap top unless I am locked behind closed doors as both my cats, siblings, insist on retyping my emails and impregnating my keyboard with cat hairs.

I had a cat that used to watch cable porn. I mean sit in front of the tv and wave his head from side to side. Turn the channel and he would lose interest. It was hilarious. I never did figure that one out...I mean who ordered those movies anyway?

I have two cats at the moment that have free run of the house, and their strangeness is that they sleep in the living room, but will run and hide when I come home... Then they keep hiding for about 10 or 15 minutes. Then they come in and snuggle and purr like they have been waiting for me all day.

You probably didn't raise them from kittens. That's normal cat behaviour. Did I mention that they were evil and hated humans (but will not hesitate to exploit them)?

She still does this, in fact just this morning she woke me up by dropping a milk ring at the foot of my bed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiA2gz2TY9c

She also only drinks water from the bottle and not if you put it on the floor. I fear for the monster of a daughter i may bring into this world some day.

hehe - the little cat who likes to sit on my shoulder - LOVES for me to throw her little nerf balls - and repeat 90 times as she fetches them and lays them at your feet. Sometimes she walks over and soaks them in the water dish - have NO idea why. But - when she has a ball - her little meow changes and sounds like a question - going "up" on the end. Funny.

The creature that is masquerading as a cat who lets us share our
house with him has a habit of knocking over trash bins (small office sized ones) in the
house, all of them.
He seeks out plastic grocery bags that he then attacks and kills, protecting us from
the dangers of polyethylene.
He also has a habit of biting your calves as you walk by.
