A question for you young whipper snappers in college

I attended the university from 2002 to 2006. My college generation was at the forefront of when ipod's and other mp3 players were just coming out. Hell, I took a cd player to the gym one day. Man was that an awkward session.

My question has to do with televisions. I had a 19" sony trinitron all four years. Plasma and DLP tv's were developing technologies. Now they're a dime a dozen. Have the dorm rooms shifted such that lots of people have 30" or larger flat screen or even flat panel televisions in their tiny dorm rooms?

They were simply too expensive when I was in school.

Even at state schools where kids are supposed to be working-class, mommy and daddy pay for everything. There were mostly 17"-29" LCD TVs and monitors, though. I can't recall anything too big.

I have a 28" monitor in my room and it is the most amazing thing to everyone else in this hall. I guess 30"ers+ aren't commonplace yet. Most people just have laptops and some old 15" tv... I'd say 90%.

those are the same years I attended college... and exactly the same tv I had (still do) for as much as I watch it, its probably only seen use equivalent to a 2-year-old TV, I'm glad I didn't invest in anything bigger!

Now, the CD player at the gym.... oh my.
I remember trying to jog with mine in JR high/HS- that anit-skip never did work, did it?

The RIT Inn that many of my college attending friends have 42'' LCDs in every room.

Most of the dudes on campus also have LCD TVs.

Seems like 1/2 or so of the people here have 24ish inch lcd monitors. Some, like my roommate , have upper 30 to low 40 inch monitors. The rest of use generally have whatever size screen our laptop has.

I actually had (and still have) dual 17" CRTs in my room. It wasn't exactly the hit of the hall, but I did live in the sports/slacker building.

That's just wasted desk space. CRT's are horrible.

I can remember when my sister first went to college in 99 and she had to figure out how to fit a CRT monitor, printer, and scanner onto the desk. It was a mess considering the wires took at least half the space as well.

I was a late bloomer to technology. I didn't get caught by the ipod craze, and still haven't. I even spent a week researching cd players to find the perfect one for me. What a putz.

Eventually I learned and got a simple mp3 player and my workouts improved because I spent more time exercising and less time trying to hide the shame.

You two make me feel old (school 2001-2005) and probably make others feel even older. I didn't have a flat panel monitor until after I got out of college. In the dorms, I had a 6" portable TV/VCR combo that needed to be degaussed every couple of hours. My first CD player didn't even have anti-skip. But that's ok, I hate jogging/running.

Some people have their parents buy part or all of it for them. Others work for it, and then some (like me) get it for free.

I didn't get a TV until I got my free LCD a few days ago. I barely ever watch TV or movies, so the purchase was never justified.

It took me a few years to get an iPod for myself. I started with MP3 players sometime in 2005, though. The one that I bought then still works!

I just bought a 22" LCD and returned it. I have plenty of desk space and I much prefer the softness of CRTs when programming!

The U of R doesn't have to use an Inn for student housing. They're better than that.

They just build footbridges over the river and put up new buildings in depressed neighborhoods.

in my day we couldn't power both a TV and a VCR on the amperage the circuit breaker allowed into our dorm rooms. Needed to run an extension cord out into the hall.

I was just thinking about this the other day (also graduated 06), as I sat and admired my space saving 32" LCD in my tiny apartment.

I never took a cd player to the gym, I just used those small radio's that were fairly light.

I've considered switching back to crt. I have a dual screen lcd setup, but I really miss the high res I used to use when I programmed. All these big fonts are for old people.

I doubt I will ever switch, but it comes to mind once in a while.
