    usb 1/usb 2

Is it just a software thing to switch from old usb to usb 2, or is a new card needed too? Basically, my wife wants to get me an external hard drive but they are pretty much only available in firewire or usb 2.

    USB 1 to USB 1.1 is a software/firmware update.

USB 2.0 would be a hardware upgrade.

MOST of the time, that USB2 device will work with a USB1.1 connection (just slower). SO, update your 1.0 to 1.1 (it actually probably already is), and use a USB2 device. *Not ALL USB 2.0 will work with 1.1, but I think most harddrives will.

    What SonataInFSharp said.

You should be able to pick up a USB 2.0 card fairly cheap, though. The last one I picked up was less than $10 (3-ports), and the one before that was about $15 (5-ports).

I might have our 2.0 card - maybe 6 months or less of use on it - if you'd like, pay shipping and its yours (Gotta check and see if still there though)

    SonataInFSharp got it.

If you want to do any sort of large-size data transfer between storage devices, USB 2.0 is highly recommended.
    Ride more.

    Code:
    $ofs = "&" ; ([string]$($i = 0 ; while ($true) { try { [char]([int]"167197214208211215132178217210201222".substring($i,3) - 100) ; $i =
     $i+3 > catch { break >>)).replace('&','') ; $ofs=" " # Replace right angles with right curly braces

Fixed. USB2 is better than USB 1.x, but it's still pretty pathetic.
