Tell Me Everything the Wii Can Do!

I could probably search all day on Google and compile a list of websites with sponsored information, but I want to hear from FOOsters because it's more real, and more fun...

My wife has been wanting to get a Wii for about two years now; not for Christmas, just in general. I have been hesitant about it since I am afraid we will play it twice and then it will sit under the TV, unplayed, sort of like my PlayStation2, which I talked about before and still don't know what to do with. That being said, though, the Wii would be more down our alley for our gaming style habits than a PlayStation/Xbox, etc, so the Wii might get regular use, especially when the baby becomes a child (I know someone, personally, whose 3 year old is quite successful using the Wii).

Anyway, I haven't taken console gaming seriously since the Colecovision/Intellivision/Sega Genesis era, so I want some input before I consider buying this Wii thing. (My wife put the ball in my court regarding the purchase since I am the former gamer and she hasn't played a video game since Dr. Robotnik's Mean Jelly Bean Machine.)

Aside from buying games at the store, putting them into the Wii, and playing them, what all can the Wii do?

-I have heard that you can download all the old NES games and play on the Wii.
-I have heard that you can download a browser and browse the web on the Wii.
-I have heard that you can create an avatar that stays with you for all the games.
-I have heard that there is some type of Wii store you can shop using the Wii.
-What about Internet gaming? Is it subscription based?
-I have heard that some games change their gameplay based on other games you have played.

How many of these things are true, and to what extent, and what else can this Wii thing do?

Can you go to any store and buy them yet, or are they still impossible to find? From what I have heard, it's still hit or miss, regardless of store or season.

Help!

Thanks, y'all!

It's true, mostly... Not all NES games are avaliable but they make anywhere from 3-5 avaliable every week (at this point the library is pretty sizable). Games cost about $5 each for NES games, $8 for Super Nintendo Games, and $10 for N64 games. You can even get games for the Sega Master System and Genesis, Turbo Grafix 16, and Neo Geo. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Jelly Bean Machine is even avaliable. I've picked up a bunch of classic games that i was never able to get (some Japan only releases).

Yes, there is an Opera browser avaliable for $5 or $10 i believe, probably not worth it unless you don't have a computer.

-I have heard that you can create an avatar that stays with you for all the games.

That would be your "Mii" character. You can make as many as you want. Not all games take advantage of them but there are a bunch that do (Wii Sports is the most notable one espically since it comes with the Wii).

-I have heard that there is some type of Wii store you can shop using the Wii.

The Wii shopping channel is where you get all your downloadable content and Virtual Console games (all the old NES games mentioned above). You purchase points that can be spent on games either at a store (you get a card with a code you use to redeem the points online) or you can enter your credit card info directly. $1 for 100 points.

-What about Internet gaming? Is it subscription based?

Not too many games take advantage of online gaming, but those that do have it for free. Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Brothers Melee are afew.

-I have heard that some games change their gameplay based on other games you have played.

Um, can't say i've heard about this...

As for avaliability, they're still hard to find.
