Airport security question

Why do I seem to always be in possession of items which might raise questions from TSA?

Two items in question, both of which I'd like to take with me during my return flight home from college:
Corsair survivor flash drive --- all aluminum case, looks like a vile that might contain a virus or WMD?
http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Flash-.../dp/B000WJTENI

And a 40oz stainless steel water bottle w/stainless cap.

My biggest concern is the water bottle. It will be empty, but is this something that might cause concern and possibly get confiscated?

I wouldn't be worried about the flash drive. Can't you just check the water bottle?

Check your luggage. Pack the bottle inside your checked bag and leave it uncapped.

I know I'd sure feel safer if an empty bottle was taken from you.

Yay security theatre.

Check their web site very thoroughly and make sure it doesn't violate any of their rules. If it does, you're better off mailing it home via Express mail.

The empty bottle will be fine. I had a backpack full of empty water bottles coming home from Vegas and not a word from them.

I've gone through security with my bike lights, home-built electronic boards, and all kinds of stuff that looks menacing and evil, and I've never even gotten a second look from TSA people. I also have a lot of credentials that would mark me as "evil" in their database (including a Pilot's license)...

You won't have to worry about the water bottle or the flash drive so long as the bottle is empty. I bring various tools with me often and I've gotten through with things before that could be used for mass destruction. Like a lighter when they were banned.

And to add, there are four "S"'s printed on the bottom of you're boarding pass if you were "randomly selected" for additional screening. It kinda takes the random out of it when they tell you right on the ticket that you are going to get searched.

I got two sets of highly dangerous knitting needles through security earlier this month. Mind you the woman at the x-ray machine did spend a long, long time peering at the image on the screen before deciding that I could probably do more harm with a ballpoint pen than with a set of circular knitting needles.

Then I discovered that I left the pattern at home, so I could only knit a couple of inches of sweater before calling it a day.

You can actually carry on a window breaker, empty plastic water bottle, aluminum flash light with assault head and aluminum flash drive.

no one stopped me

it just can't be too pointy.

How does that work for the knitting needles then? Definitely pointy.

Heh, a 3 D-Cell Maglight is a much more dangerous weapon than a lot of items on the ban list.

knitting needles don't have enough girth at the grip for a reliable stabbing device

If Clive Owen can kill someone with a carrot in some particularly lousy movie, James Bond could certainly kill someone with knitting needles. These were circular needles. I always wondered if the plastic could make a nice garotte, if you were that way inclined.
