Mass. man melting snow with blowtorch ignites home
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081223/...blowtorch_fire

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Fire officials in New Bedford, Mass., say a man using a blowtorch to melt ice on his back porch ended up setting his house on fire, causing up to $30,000 in damage.

Fire Capt. Scott Kruger tells The Standard-Times of New Bedford that no on was injured during Monday's incident at the three-story home.

Kruger says the man was using a torch hooked up to a 20-pound propane cylinder. He got too close to the building's wood frame and ignited the vinyl siding. The fire quickly spread into the building's second- and third-floor apartments.

It took 25 firefighters to subdue the blaze that damaged bedrooms in the upstairs units, and caused damage to the structure and wiring.

The homeowner will not be charged.
Can you believe this guy? What a wuss.
I'd be suing, these big corporations need to be held accountable and not allowed to sell defective snow-blowtorches to unsuspecting citizens!

Now we'll have warning labels on our blow torches...

"Do not use to melt snow directly in contact with vinyl siding."

I think mother nature should be required to put safety warnings on EACH and EVERY snow flake.

Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)

The real issue is that warning labels stick very poorly to fire.

Hey hold it, so a blowtorch can light up a house? Dang. When I was in college, a guy hired me and another guy to remove the layers and layers of old paint from his old apartment building so he could re-paint it. To remove the old paint we used blowtorches to heat up the paint and soften it up so we could scrape and peel it off. For some reason it never occurred to me that we could burn the building down.

I think it makes more sense to clean up snow with a blowtorch than doghair:

The Tabulinas had lived in the 2,000-square-foot house since 1992, but because they were in the middle of refinancing their mortgage, Alfredo Tabulina is concerned they also might be between home-insurance policies.

Tabulina said he has used a blowtorch to clean up dog hair from the dog's sleeping area before.

not to mention the odor difference between blowtorched snow and blowtorched dog hair
