Anyone with 30gb Zunes?

If so and you are experiencing problems, here's why.

They never really said why it's happening. Is it only the 30GB model? (I should call The Girl and find out if her 4GB model is affected.)

Part of me says why care for a speedy fix today, lots of speculation is up to date problems, and should resolve itself automatically on boot tomorrow... Plus you can't get it docked anyway before it locks.

Kind of wanted my music today... oh well.

Old first generation 30GB models with the new firmware only, internal clock related, you can manually reboot them but once the internal clock syncs during a dock it freezes again.

Mine is operable now. The date thing apparently fixed itself after 24 hours of being pointy end up.

IMHO, the Zune is a good MP3 player, except for two black eyes. This ROM glitch is one; the fact that only the Zune software can be used to transfer stuff (so you can't use it like a hard drive like you can with ipods) is the other.

Apparently you can but it's dumb and only doable for the geek factor.

Really the $160 price tag difference and the fact that we keep getting firmware upgrades as opposed to "buy a new one" is what sold me.

Part of me wants the date fixed, being as there is a good chance I could still be using this in 4 years, part of me says "it's one day, and I'll have better things to do on new years next time around".

Really though, date problems are huge noob mistakes, comeon.

Since I got the Zune I have for free, I can't complain. However, if I were buying a MP3 player, I want something more multiplatform, so I'd probably just give in, and buy an iPod.

iPod 5Gs not only run pretty cheap now, but can also be recognized as mass storage devices. No reason to buy a Zune, really.

I really wish Microsoft could make the Zunes PlaysForSure compatible with a firmware update. Most PlaysForSure (well, technically called Certified for Windows Vista now) MP3 or "MP4" players I come across have the ability to be accessed like a hard disk or be accessed in MTP mode via a menu selection.

Regardless, because of this limitation, I would choose another player type. I have had great luck with Creative players. When I buy another high capacity player, I probably will just pony up for an iPod because there isn't much of a price premium for them anymore (especially the non iPod touches.)

I'm looking at $200 new, $125 used, still more expensive than I got my Zune, which was a factory refirb, and has gotten new firmware for the past 2 years for free.

Plus I use my cheap free phone for 2gb of media storage, anything more I stream from home, people lolhaveacow when I whip out my little flip phone and transfer media from it, just oneupped people who spend hundreds for that feature, and they stare in disbelief when they see what I can do at home from anywhere, including through 100% of practical firewalls.

Oh and iTunes.

I went with Sandisk before Zune, they're cheap and really nice, doesn't get more cross platform than SanDisk, though I wish they supported playlists... Probably do in their better models.

The SanDisk flash players rock. I have one whose only real fault is the lack of playlists. I can just copy files onto it, unmount, it reindexes, and go about my business.

Now, if some third party can crank out an 80GB or 120GB player that can play MP3, AAC, and WMA, I'd be chill.
