I was trying to find something interesting that happened on the day I was born to put my age into context, but since I mentioned Elvis being the King earlier...

I was about a month and a half old when Elvis bought Graceland.

Do they even use skates at skating rinks now or is it all inline?

I would guess it is all inline now. I remember the rumbling of the skates as one went across black top with the metal wheels. You needed to oil them every so often for smoother rolling. The key would adjust the tension on the metal clams up front. You voulf make the skates somewhat larger or smaller by adjustment s underneath! Wow! The world sure has changed. I showed my daughter a 45rpm record the other day along with the little piece for the middle so you could center it on the turntable.

Ones around here still have the four wheeled skates, and actually ban inline on some sessions.

I had a couple of pairs of the skates you put on with the key. Wore them out having my younger brother tow me around on his bicycle. It started out with me acting as his training wheels...honest

I rode my bicycle past your window last night

I roller skated to your door at daylight

You got a brand new key

I think that we should get together and try them out you see

I been looking around awhile

You got something for me

Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates

You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car

Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far

For somebody who don't drive

I been all around the world

Some people say, I done all right for a girl

I asked your mother if you were at home

She said, yes .. but you weren't alone

Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me

I'm okay alone, but you've got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates

You got a brand new key

I think that we should get together and try them out to see

La la la la la la la la, la la la la la la

Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates

You got a brand new key

Quads RULE the skating rinks. Inlines are not common, they are seen as clumsy and silly looking by some. The customization and difference in setups you can achieve with quads today are mind boggling.

On the street (like PATH guessed) inlines are the preffered skate. They have bigger wheels that are usually narrower and SOFTER, wich lets them roll over obstacles easyer. New skaters, agressive skaters (the ones that do tricks), speed skaters, and fitness skaters will MOSTLY use inlines.

There is still alot of people though that use Quads on the street, but I would guess that the ratio would be something like 3-1. But with the new "QUADLINE" brand of skate that uses the larger diameter wheels there is more people hitting the trails and streets on quads. They are just as fast as regular recreation, and fitness inline skates.

If you are interested check it out http://www.quadlineskates.com/

Quad skates though still outnumber inlines in sales.

Interesting fact: Speed (road) skaters today can achieve the same speeds or better that a bicycle can on the flats (inline vs bike) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rgmsNidrwI
They are also way faster on the decents, but are also way waayyyyyy slower on the climbs.

The climbs is where the Diamond Frame bicycle really shows its superiority over all others.

Funny you should mention skaters and cyclists. I have been in races with them. Well, it was sort of one of those rolling up to the light kind of things. He passed me. I passed him. Then I turned the afterburners on and lost him on a 2% incline. Great fun though!

oh yeah! There is NO contest on the climbs. even slight ones.

There is nothing you can do Human Powered to keep up with a geared DF bicycle on a climb. Even recumbents cant keep up. The DF bicycle represents one of the highest levels of human ingenuity. Its an amazing invention.
