Cholestasis of Pregnancy

Around Monday of last week my wife began complaining of intense itching all over her body 24 hours a day. Its been horrible she hasn't slept in a week. We had a scheduled appointment with the Doctor on Thursday and they ran a liver function test which came back over 300 (normal is 60), which led to a frighting call last night asking us to come in immediately for additional testing.

So we spent most of the day today in the hospital doing a fetal stress test and more blood work. The doctor is now 100% certain its Cholestasis. Which is a condition that develops during the 3rd trimester and causes the gall bladder to stop secreting bile. Its rare and only afflicts 2 in every 1000 women. Besides being uncomfortable for my wife it won't harm her. Unfortunately it is harmful to the baby, and he will have to be delivered early. My wife is 30 weeks right now and the doctors believe she may make it till 35 weeks and hopefully a little longer. If we try to go full term he has a good chance of dieing before birth. So far baby is doing great, but things can quickly change.

My wife is on medicine to decrease the bile acids, but the only cure is to deliver the baby. Its very nerve racking knowing that my son will be delivered premature . I know the problems premys face even if they are just a couple of weeks premature.

So everyone be on the look out for any intense itching during your 3rd trimester. Just thought I would share our story.

Sorry to hear that, positive thoughts sent for a healthy delivery for both of them.

Now I lay me down to sleep
Keep my bike safe from the bicycle thief
Keep my tootsies toasty warm
keep my carbon from any harm

Good Night Road Bike
Good Night Moutain Bike
Good night all you Foosters
And good night Moon
