Death Row Inmate Pulls Out Own Eye and Eats It.

    http://www.woai.com/news/local/story...og.cspx?rss=68

HOUSTON (AP) - A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye, authorities said Friday.

Andre Thomas told officers he ate it.

Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.

While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas similarly had plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and had him taken to the unit infirmary.

"Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman Jason Clark said Friday.

Thomas was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after the Dec. 9 incident. Then he was transferred and remains at the Jester Unit, a prison psychiatric facility near Richmond southwest of Houston.

"He will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from Day 1," Bobbie Peterson-Cate, Thomas' trial attorney, told the Sherman Herald Democrat. "He is insane and mentally ill. It is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."

At his trial, defense lawyers also argued he suffered from alcohol and drug abuse.

Thomas does not have an execution date.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in October upheld his conviction and death sentence for the death of 13-month-old Leyha Marie Hughes. Also killed March 27, 2004, were his wife, Laura Christine Boren, 20, and their son, 4-year-old Andre Lee.

Thomas, from Texoma, walked into the Sherman Police Department and told a dispatcher he had just murdered the three and had stabbed himself in the chest.

Thomas told police how he put his victims' hearts in his pocket and left their apartment, took them home, put them in a plastic bag and threw them in the trash.

Court documents described the three victims as having "large, gaping wounds to their chests."

Why people do stuff like that? I don't get it either. Screw "the voices". Back when I got out of surgery I kinda took more pills than I was supposed to and went to the back yard. There, a squirrel approached me and said "why r u so gloom?". I told her that the pain went away but by foot was still feeling numb and she said "well, cut it off". Then I told the squirrel "What?! You better *** off before I cut YOUR effing legs! and your tail too!". True story.

I loved the bit where they say the guy was legally sane and had a fair trial etc.

How could you possibly be sane if you cut out both your own eyes and did his original crime?

A man who eats his eyeball is nuts by any definition of what nuts really is! This guy should be so full of Haldol that he does the Haldol shuffle. He should be in a facility for the criminally insane. I believe in the use of capital punishment but in this case.............they dropped the ball

If they execute this man they are seriously in the wrong. He is guilty of murder but cannot be held accountable by reason of mental defect. The State of Texas should remand him for life. My .02 cents on the matter.

... aaaaaaand I'll be having nightmares tonight...

In my Advanced Abnormal Psychology seminar we have weekly debates on different controversial topics in the mental health field, assigned by lottery. My first one is in a couple of weeks, and I'm arguing the "yes" side of "is involuntary treatment of mental illness ethical." That'll be easy enough since that's what I already believe, but my friend drew the "no" side and was cursing. She's a psychiatric nurse...

(There's another one in February about the ethics of allowing people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder to undergo medically unneccessary amputations in order to alleviate their sense of "wrongness" about said body part. I didn't draw that one though).

When told that due to his deep insight he was being granted a full pardon, Andre Thomas replied, "Wow, I never saw that coming."
