Any will be a big step up from a P&S but $10 isn't much difference for a nicer camera. However, the D90 won't have much extra over the other two that you'll be able to learn in only one week. Then again, if you're getting the kit lens, the D90's is a little more versatile, the D90 is a little better in low light, and since we're talking memories the video mode available only on the D90 might be fun for you.

And since you'll be shopping for an SLR anyways, why not get a feel for a slightly nicer camera offers?

All will take outstanding pictures. Rent a D90 and play with the video function - then report back and let us know. I would love to have some video capability for my D80, but from early reports on the D90, I may need to wait another generation or 2 to get what I want. All will take great pictures.

The other choice is the d200, and yes im just getting a kit lens to go with it for the rental. So maybe the d90 would be fun.

I'm curious, since you are renting it for a few days, how much will the total cost be? Reason I ask is that I just got a brand new D200 for $799 from Amazon. There is a shop here that rented one out to me for about $75 a day last year. If your rental costs approach anything over $400 I'd buy it. You could use it and sell it for about $100-200 less and still be ahead.

You can get a refurb D60 from Adorama for only $300. If your renting for 14 days, anything over $21, it'll actually be cheaper to buy! Sure thats lens only, but the kit lens for a D60 is only $100 brand new. If the rental is $30/day, 14 days will buy a refurb D60 + a kit lens
