US Senate: How long does a governor have to appoint someone to the senate?

This is kind of off-topic, even for Foo, but I haven't had much luck with my Google searches so I'm hoping someone may know.

I live in New York State, which is losing one of its senators to the new presidential cabinet. Our governor has not been very forthcoming with who the successor will be.

The Senate has already begun their new session. It appears that our soon-to-be-ex Senator has been attending, so so far everything looks good. But she begins her new job in under a week, correct? Does a new senator have to be chosen before the 20th? Is there a deadline at all?

Hopefully my facts are straight, I don't really keep up with the news.

Also, please -- I'm looking for procedure, not politics.

Thanks!

He is having to be very circumspect in taking his bribery offers thanks to Blagojevich, so it may take longer to sell the seat than in days of old.

How an unexpired U.S. Senate term is filled is a matter of state law, not federal law. Thus the procedures and time lines vary from state to state.

Oh, and what jsharr said.

Hmm, that's interesting, I didn't know that.

Ok, anyone have any info specific to NYS?

I tried to find some on the NYS site, but was unable to after some very rudimentary google searches. Send a message to your senator, congressman, etc, if you are a NY resident and get someone in his office to explain the procedure to you.

Yeah, I spent a half hour or so wandering around without coming up with much.

Yeah, that works. I hadn't thought of that.

I'll post back what I find out.
