Will this trigger my room's fire alarm?

I went to Target to buy a fan, but all I saw were space heater fans. So I picked up one with a fan setting, and put it in my dorm room near my desk. When the coils heat up (and when I feel the heat), I notice a slight burning odor for the first 5-6 seconds. I just wonder if there is still subtle burning odors in the air that can reach the smoke detector and sound off the siren. I'm in a dorm room, so this is the last thing I need.

And even then it takes a decent amount of smoke for it to go off. I soldered in my room all the time with no problem.

it's not supposed to smell like burning when you use it.

if it starts to smoke, I'd get it replaced.

Quite often it is dust etc burning off the coils - If it keeps doing it, i'd get it checked or return it. The big industrial heaters at work make the whole receiving room smell when they come on - but only for the first day or so, and then the rest of the winter is fine. Shouldn't set off the alarm though.

It is usually dust, oil or other manufacturing residue burning off the coils. It will go away.

I was 13. Dad was cooking in his apartment just after the divorce. No video cam.

They tend to do that when they are new. Sometimes when they have been stored for year... it's usually dust, like other have said. If it keeps doing it, then get it replaced.
