I hate a-holes.

Yep, hate them. As some of you know, my bike was stolen during the long weekend, and I'm really, really upset over it. I put fliers advertising a reward for its return around the neighborhood, and also filed a police report. Not much worries about the cost and my mobility, as insurance probably covers it and some nice person from BF lent me her foldie so I could get around until I find the bike or get a new one. I'm just really angry that my beloved bike, which I spent hours and hard-earned $$ upgrading and making my own, was stolen by some a-hole bike thief.

Yesterday, some jerk-face calls me up and leaves a message on my voicemail, saying that he "found" my bike and that I won't see it again unless I give him $500. He called using an unidentified number, but left another number for me to contact him at. F**k him. I did call the police about it and they said that it's probably a prank call by some kid who saw my flier, and that they can't do anything about it but they can set up a sting operation if it turns out that the idiot who called me really is the bike thief. The officer I spoke to was very polite, but also made it seem like it was a waste of time, which I agree with. I hate idiot a-holes prank callers, and I really, really hate a-hole bike thieves. What do I do about this slimeball who called me? If he IS the bike thief, I want him prosecuted (I was willing to give a reward for the return, but extortion is just TOO much), but if he isn't it's just a waste of time and resources for me and the police.

Go to a payphone and call the number. If it looks like you can set up a meeting, get the police involved. If it is a prank caller, take an air horn to blow into the phone.

Call him back and setup a meet. When he shows up, run him over w/ a car, then call the police and report the accident. Make it look like he was riding the bike. You'll get off scot free.

I'm sorry to hear about your bike, Neko, and that sucks about the phone call.

Have you heard about this cell phone incident? It made National TV....short story is they got their property back.. Dunno if this will help you at all. But stolen bikes are a real problem; it would be awesome if the bike community picked up on this approach and possibly started getting some bikes back.

Have your financier contact him and pay him with a cashiers check for enough money to pay the $500 plus the fee for the company you will have pick up the bike since you are out of town. Have him pay the company with the excess, so that the company can pick it up and store it securely until you return.

Now, we just need to find someone that knows how those Nigerians make money on deals like this... I have never understood how they do that.

I missed the first posting - sorry about the bike - had one of mine stolen a couple years ago and saw it go by a couple times (had a gang in the city taking high end bikes - mine got ridden by the leader who rode in the middle of the pack - till he either killed it or sold it - I followed them twice - called the cops, sigh). So I know the feeling. sigh

But I'd definitely follow up on that #$%!@ who called you!

Sorry Neko. It always sucks when some asswipe thinks he deserves the bike more than you. Try to set up a meet with this guy if he calls again, and if it looks like he's your thief, get the cops involved. I hope you retrieve it. Sending happy good vibes your way in the meantime.

That sucks nekohime. The last time I had a bike stolen (1981), I knew who took it, but because I didn't see him take it, and because I couldn't produce the bike, he got away with it. I still get a bit upset about that.

That stinks.

When I was young, someone stole my bike. A couple days later someone said they "found it" and returned it for $10 or so. I was just happy to get it back.

Anyway, it sometimes is possible to have a bike returned. I'm not sure how to handle your situation, though.

Since her bike was stolen, she clearly needs a rental. A big one, like an SUV, or one of those F950 ford pickup trucks with the gooseneck trailer hookup in the bed.

Call the number, set up the meet, and deliver an all out public beat down. Take your bike back and u-lock the thief by the neck to a parking meter. Strip him down and use a Mag44 permanent marker to scrawl the words "BICYCLE THIEF" on him from knees to forehead.

Be sure to issue balaclavas, and wear gloves.

Lolz, that made my day I just bought a u-lock to protect my borrowed bike, so that'd be perfect.

In theory. Only in theory.

Need to put out a bait bike. It needs to be wired up to a 1Kv source and placed next to a water puddle. Set a camera up to capture the fun.
