    Travelling with a DSLR

I have a Canon Rebel XSi with an 18-55mm IS lens that I'm planning on taking with me on a trip to the Dominican Republic in April.

I have a camera bag for it, but that's about it. What else should I have? Battery grip? A clear filter and a cleaning kit is on the list, anything else?

    I'd consider one of these.
Not sure I'd bother with the batter grip unless your away from power for days at a time. Other then that, stock up on memory cards.

There's a river boat ride that follows a lot of the river where "Apocalypse Now" was shot. Pretty cool if your a fan.

I hiked 280 miles of the appalachian trail lugging a Minolta StSi...

The only problem with taking a DSLR to the DR is that it will not come home with you.

Well, the power down there damaged a camcorder that was on charge last year so I'm not sure I trust my camera on it.

    Which river?

That should be fun to take through security

    Care to elaborate on that?

A second battery in case the first one stops working, or just so I have another one if the first one runs out?

Understood, power was kinda ****y as I recall.

Pretty sure it was the Chavon, trip left from inside Casa de Campo property. Nothing fancy, just a nice slow river ride with a pretty cool narrative. Couple James Bond films also filmed there. Crew stayed at Campo and worked from there.

The reactions range from suspicion to embarrassment, depending.

Ah, I'm in Punta Cana this year. Been there a few times before, looking forward to going back.

A dust blower would be a good thing, I rarely need to clean the sensor but with my luck I'd need to as soon as I got down there if I didn't bring one.

Sure. Don't let it out of your sight while you're there - along with any other valuables - especially if you go "off reservation" (meaning away from the Americanized parts).

That's a given, this has been a yearly trip for me for 4 years now. It's usually other resort guests I worry about, though, not the locals.

Let your DSLR out of your sight in downtown Cincinnati, same result. I'd begrudge the DR's less.
Good trip Cranky, man I loves me the Caribbean.

Me too. Part of the plan next year is a Moto Caribe session that'll really let me experience the place, since I've only ever been on resorts before.

    Thanks for your help, guys
