Grades

For full disclosure, I have had a little bit too much to drink tonight. But I think I earned it.

Today at three, the grades from my first semester of law school came out. These letters are extremely important; they determine what type of job you will get your first summer, and your summer jobs really separate you from others in the same pack as you.

Law school students are difficult to differentiate in many cases and good grades are hard to come by. Almost everyone is expecting an A in every class; after all, most have made A's in school and stood out academically their entire life. Law school is unforgiving and attempts to screen out those who learn what the game is about quickly from those who don't is hard. Some believe professors simply throw the final essay exams--which are 100% of a law students' grade--down the stairs and give the ones at the bottom an A. I don't believe that and I feel life as a law student isn't that bad; I know I am privileged to be here, to have the fortune I have had in life, and to enjoy what I do every day. But law school IS stressful.

And today was one of the most significant in many of our lives. One of my friends made an A and three A-s. That is EXCELLENT. I made two As, a B+ and a B. I was very proud of myself and extremely proud of my friend.

I don't know exactly how to describe it to those who aren't here; it is not the most difficult experience, for sure. It is just school and the consequences are small in the long run. But I worked extremely hard and I am very satisfied, even after a day of indulgence (4:30pm to 2:00am of drinking). So for all those who know what it is like to invest your soul in something (and I know there are many here ) and see positive results, congrats! And to those who haven't seen what they have wanted in life, keep your head up.

I am a very happy barerider tonight!

Congrats on the good grades. I hoped your celebrations also included your friend.

Keep on plugging - 1L grades are sooo much more important than 2 or 3L grades it isn't funny. Top grades and Law Review are huge factors when it comes to getting a job, especially in this market because they're all the recruiters will see when you do summer job interviews in the Fall of 09.
