My guess is they're from "search engine optimisation" companies, trying to drive up the google ranking of different sites by signing up a profile on a bunch of forums and adding the site to the profile's homepage, in the hope that being linked from somewhere popular like bikeforums will make the site they're promoting look better to google's pagerank algorithm.
