Conrad Johnson amps - free

I hit the jackpot this weekend. My brother has a business that provides clean-out services. Many home owners and realtors use his business to clean out houses prior to listing them for sale. He was cleaning out a house that was for sale as a result of a divorce. He called me because he came upon two vacuum tube amplifiers and knew that I might be interested. Then he told me that the name on the amps was Conrad Johnson.

I went to the house he was cleaning out and discovered that he had come across two pristine Conrad Johnson Premier Twelve amplifiers. We contacted the realtor my brother was working for and told him of the find. The realtor stated we should abide by the clean -out contract which says that anything removed from the house by the clean-out contractor is the property of the contractor.

I now have two very nice CJ12s that cost me the price of gas to get to the clean-out house and lunch for my brother.

I am using a Manley Steelhead preamp to drive 4 Paoli SOB monoblock amplifiers.

The Premier 12s sound very good. They have more power and a little better bass response than the Paolis, but the Paolis are just magical in the midrange.

The party involved in the divorce who didn't own them, I wager.

There's something honestly tragic about that, cool too, but tragic. Imagine finding a dusty Santa Cruz Blur or something...something that someone once valued and knew enough to value, but that some sad thing happened where it was left behind.

The CJs have left the building.

I cleaned and re-tubed the CJs and then auditioned then against the amps that were in the system; Paoli SOBs. The CJs have slightly better bass response, but the Paolis walked all over the CJs in the midrange. Female vocals (Sarah McLachlan, Shelby Lynn, Karla Bonoff, Norah Jones, etc) through the Paolis are so magical they will give you an orgasm!!!

Anyway, it was nice having the CJs for a few months, but they have been sold and have a happy, new home.

Nice find! I'll keep my McIntosh monoblocks, although they did cost a bit more than gas and a lunch!
